Women Entering Business (W.E.B.) and  the Office of Inclusive Excellence both hosted events in honor of Women’s History Month, a jeopardy event and a panel discussion respectively.

Women’s History Month commemorates and encourages the study, observance and celebration of the vital role of women in American history, as noted by the official website for Women’s History Month.

W.E.B. hosted the Women’s History Jeopardy event in the Wiseman Lounge on March 20, 2024.

We came up with Jeopardy because it’s a fun and interactive game that students will be able to compete against their peers in,” stated W.E.B.’s Social Media Director Emily Mallo.

W.E.B. also hosted an event for Women’s History Month in March of 2023 in conjunction with the Political Science Forum and Start by Believing, titled Women’s History Month: Empowerment Workshop.

This event featured a panel discussion with women in different career fields with different backgrounds, a self-defense demonstration, and a chance for attendees to win prizes according to TheDen.

“Last year we decided to jump ahead and get started on planning our Fall 2023-Spring 2024 events and we definitely wanted to do something engaging for Women’s History Month,” clarified Mallo.

Attendees of the event were asked questions from five categories: Women in History, Girl Math, Pop Culture, Women in Sports, and SXU Women.

Mallo confirmed that there would be prizes for the winners of the Jeopardy game and emphasized that attendees should “brush up” on their basic knowledge of women’s history.

As an organization, W.E.B. serves to “support the personal and professional development of Graham School of Management students. WEB is dedicated to not only helping prepare students to reach their full potential in their professional lives after college but also during their time at SXU,” voiced Mallo.

“WEB members are able to network with fellow students creating the opportunity to inspire and support each other as well as create a bond that could be beneficial in the future. WEB aims to prepare its members for their future and to demonstrate the value of diversity in business. WEB is open to all students currently or previously enrolled at Saint Xavier University,” continued Mallo.

The Office of Inclusive Excellence will host a special reading and faculty panel around the book “Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men” by Caroline Criado-Perez on March 21.

“We live in a world that was designed with the average man at the forefront; what implications does this have for women and humanity as a whole? What shifts need to happen in health, music, foreign policy, computer science, design and more to create a world that takes women into account? “Invisible Women” explores these questions, and we invite you to do the same,” the email invite writes.

Jacqueline Battalora, Ph. D., M.T.S., J.D., voiced that she found the book riveting, with each chapter she read she “was indignant by the extent to which girls and women are excluded and the consequences of this exclusion for everyone”.

Battalora has shared the insights from the book with her students, and plans to add it as a required reading for the Women, Change, and Society course that she teaches.

“It is my belief that the overarching claim of the book (that the exclusion of girls/women from data has bad consequences for everyone) and the specific examples that support this claim are compelling. There are implications for every discipline, for every type of work, for social and international policy” added Battalora.

The idea to host the panel was brought forth by Battalora while in conversation with Vice President of Success and Inclusion Natalie Page, Ed.D.. Battalora mentioned information from the book a few times, and the last time she mentioned it Page expressed that there should be an event discussing the book.

From there, Battalora – alongside Camile Marquez, the Associate Director of Multicultural Training and Development – developed the panel presentation.

To reserve a spot for the panel discussion, email inclusiveexcellence@sxu.edu. Attendees will also receive a copy of the book the panel discusses.
