SXU’s Center For SUCCESS To Host Spring Majors & Minors Fair

On March 2, The Saint Xavier Center For SUCCESS Department will host this year’s Spring Majors and Minors Fair in the SXU Diner Atrium at 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

As stated on The Den, the event is open to all university students—and is a great opportunity for them “to explore different majors and minors that SXU offers.”

Departments that’ll be represented at the Fair include “Accounting, Art, Anthropology, Biology, Criminal Justice, Communications, Chemistry, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Computer Science, Education, History, Language and Literature (English and Spanish), Nursing (pre-clinical stage), Mathematics, Music, Political Science, Psychology, [and] Sociology.”

According to Academic and Career Resource Advisor Johnna Gerona, M.S.Ed., “Approximately 30% of undergraduate students change their major at least once during their time in college.” This information comes from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) in 2017.

Gerona wants students to “learn all of the different areas of study that SXU offers,” she stated. “Learning directly from individuals who are currently working/studying in these programs can make a difference. It’s never too late to consider other areas of study or look for ways to enhance your academics, whether it’s for a major or a minor,” Gerona continued.

Before attending the Fair, students are encouraged to register on Handshake in addition to signing up on The Den. It’s recommended they “do [their] research” and “come prepared with questions,” as stated on The Den webpage.

“This can offer a better understanding of whether a certain area of study will align with their goals,” Gerona mentioned.

Students should complete Focus 2—“an online interactive career and education planning system that uses a series of self-assessment, career exploration and decision-making tools to help users discover what majors and career paths may be right for them,” said Gerona.

They could then create a Career Portal Login with their mySXU credentials, using the access code: cougar. Gerona noted that the Focus 2 assessment is ‘optional’ and takes no more than 30 minutes to an hour to complete.

Gerona also believes this Fair is a ‘great opportunity’ for current faculty and students to “showcase their areas of study and make connections with the student body.”

“By speaking with current faculty and students in these areas of study, undeclared students can gain a better understanding of what each of these majors entail and what possible careers they can pursue post-graduation,” says Gerona.

Gerona hopes students can “takeaway knowledge about majors and minors at SXU,” even if they’re undecided. “For any students who are undeclared, rethinking their major, or want to pursue a minor, I’m hoping this fair can help them take the next steps to make their academic journey as valuable as possible.”

“By taking the step to learn about different majors and minors, I’m confident that this can help students discover different career outlooks that align with their future goals, passions, and aspirations,” she said.

Current faculty and students attending the Spring Majors and Minors Fair will be there to answer any questions people have—“and share experiences about their respective majors.”

Those with additional questions or concerns may reach out to Gerona at gerona@sxu.edu.
