NovelAI is the Future of AI Storytelling

Posted on April 6, 2022

With the popularity of Nick Walton’s AI Dungeon in 2019, artificial intelligence controlled storytelling has become a niche but growing field. While competitors to AI Dungeon like HoloAI and KoboldAI have been gaining traction, one of the most promising AI storytelling websites out right now is Anlatan’s NovelAI.

Originally, AI Dungeon offered an experience based on classic Dungeons and Dragons campaigns where a player could interact with a fantasy world in any way they wanted. For most players, AI Dungeon was an interesting novelty, but to more imaginative users, it was a dream come true.

While AI Dungeon still remains popular, its monetization methods and updated AI have been criticized by fans as limiting and intrusive. Because of this, many former AI Dungeon users have begun to use NovelAI.

What sets NovelAI apart from AI Dungeon is its approach to text generation. While AI Dungeon focused on making its AI work as a game with different modes of input for actions, dialogue, and story, NovelAI is more geared towards generating quality and cohesive prose as well as adapting to writing styles.

For example;, if you put in the lyrics to your favorite song in NovelAI, the AI will follow a verse form and repeat the verse it recognizes as the chorus. If you write a play with “CHARACTER NAME: Dialogue” form, the AI will keep generating text within that format.

NovelAI has made plenty of progress since its Alpha in early 2021, but one of the most exciting additions is the module feature. Although NovelAI is fairly competent at adapting to style and genre, those who want to focus the writing into something more specific can choose a module specific to a certain genre or writing style.

For example;, fans of Sherlock Holmes can pick the default Arthur Conan Doyle module to make the AI conform more to Doyle’s writing style. Besides specific author writing styles, the modules also accommodate genres such as fantasy, science fiction, 19th-century romance, horror, and much more. On top of the default modules, users can also upload and create custom modules based on any sort of text from film scripts to novels to poetry.

While NovelAI’s UI and interface are easy to use, things get more complicated when adjusting settings to suit your desired text output. There are sliders for how chaotic and random the story will be, how much repetition there can be, and what kinds of words are preferred. Although a beginner can get a lot out of NovelAI on default settings, more savvy writers will have to toy with settings to get the most out of it.

NovelAI’s developers recently livestreamed a Q&A discussing the future of NovelAI with text-to-speech narration and the latest AI model Krake. While the AI still isn’t quite perfect, significant progress has been made towards accommodating all kinds of writers.

NovelAI still has a long way to go if it’s to reach the same level of success as AI Dungeon. However, with a responsive development team, active community, and continuous updates and improvements, it seems like NovelAI is shaping up to be the future of AI storytelling.
