Ken’s Corner Sports Recap 9/16

Welcome back Cougars to the September 16 edition of the recap show for the SXU pro. This week, we’ll be recapping two games that occurred: one being volleyball with the other being women’s soccer.

Women’s Volleyball

Tue, September 13

The 9-3 Cougars were at home hosting the 4-8 Roosevelt University.

Set 1

The beginning of the set was very competitive as it had both teams trading points all the way up to being tied at 12-12. From here, SXU came alive with an 8-2 run. This run was sparked by some key kills from sophomores Alex Lambros and Rory Manion. Realizing the game was getting out of their grasp, Roosevelt went on a 3-0 run that put the game at 20-17 with SXU holding the lead. In the end, SXU came out with the set 1 victory winning, 25-20.

Set 2

With the loss of set 1, Roosevelt University looked to even the game by taking this set, but those pesky Cougars had other plans. Several key runs were sparked by their great front-court play. Case in point, SXU were getting some key points off of some clutch kills, and they went on to win this set 25-18

Set 3

With a 2-0 set lead, and the game very much in their favor, SXU looked to win this set and close this game as quickly as they could. That is exactly what they did as they won the set 25-18, and the game at 3 sets to Roosevelt’s 0. Sophomores Rory Manion and Alex Lambros played crucial roles in the win as they combined for 14 kills in total.

The Cougars will be at the Holiday Inn Express Invite hosted by Olivet Nazarene University this Friday, and will be hosting a game against Judson University Tuesday September 20.

Women’s Soccer

Wed, September 14

The (0-5-1) Cougars were on the road as they went up against the (4-3-0) Bethel College.

Period 1

This period was a scoreless one as both teams were honing it in defensively. Sophomore Carly Bledsoe had 2 saves on the goal in the first half, and SXU had a save as a team. Senior Hannah Bressenjer had a shot at the goal in the first half as well.

Period 2

The second period was much more competitive as it saw both teams score their first goals in the opening 30 minutes. Bethel College scored their first goal 10 minutes in, off a goal and off the header. SXU was down, but not out as they came and scored their first goal of the game. It was a milestone goal as it wasn’t only the first goal of the team, but the first goal of freshman Samantha Moran’s collegiate career. Unfortunately, this feeling of achievement would be short-lived as Bethel College scored a goal some 10 minutes later that would ultimately seal the game 2 goals to 1.

Sophomore Carly Bledsoe finished with 3 saves for the game. Freshman Samantha Moran scored the only goal for the Cougars off of Bressenjer’s assist.

The Women’s soccer team looks to obtain their first victory at home against Trinity International University on Tuesday, September 20.
