2021 Horror Watch List — Three Raw Horrors

It’s the most…wonderful time…of the year! That is, for me, and fellow horror and Halloween fanatics!

To get into the spirit of this year’s spooky season, I’m going to be recommending three horror movies to watch every week until the end of October. You might find something new, or something old but gold!

Let’s get started with my first three picks of this week, which I’m calling “raw horrors”!

Halloween (2018)

This reboot-sequel of John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) follows up 40 years ago, when Michael Myers escapes a mental institution in order to hunt and kill his sister Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis). This timeline retcons every other film, including the aspect that Laurie and Michael are siblings.

The premise is that he escapes an institution again and terrorizes Haddonfield, in search of Laurie,  who had been preparing, knowing this day would come. Laurie has an older daughter who is married and has her own daughter. While Laurie’s daughter, Karen, thinks she’s overreacting from the trauma, terror will prove her wrong and they will fight to survive to slay evil together.

Why kick it off with the remake? Because the sequel Halloween Kills is releasing in theaters October 15 and I’m stoked! Don’t let this hold you back from watching the original 1978 film though. Have a Michael Myers marathon!

You can find Halloween on the following platforms: Sling TV (premium subscription), YouTube ($3.99+), Google Play Movies & TV ($3.99+), Apple TV ($3.99+), Vudu ($3.99+), Amazon Prime Video ($3.99+), and Hulu (premium subscription).

The Lords of Salem (2012)

Rob Zombie’s usual grotesque and messy style is instead dirty and grandiose in Lords of Salem. Starring Sheri Moon Zombie as lead Heidi Hawthorne, she is unknowingly the honorable key to things other than being a DJ in Salem, Massachusetts regarding the town’s past and ancestry. This is a bizarre, yet incredible spin on witchcraft in Salem where music is a cleverly recurring theme.

The symbolism of music is my favorite aspect, as well as the raw, uncensored profanity; from the obscene language to the nude inclusivity of all body types. It’s perfect to me, because the obscenity seems genuine, reflecting a part of our nasty reality. For fans of witch plots, this is one of my favorites. You must check it out if you haven’t already!

You can find The Lords of Salem on the following platforms: Pluto TV (free), Amazon Prime Video (premium subscription), YouTube ($1.99+), Google Play Movies & TV ($1.99+), Apple TV ($3.99+), Vudu ($3.99+), and Tubi (free).

Audition (1999)

If you’re looking for something foreign, Takashi Miike’s adaptation of the novel Audition is a disturbing, psychedelic, and morbid experience. Fans of David Lynch will immediately recognize that Miike’s cinematography is inspired by his own signature surrealism; from the unnatural and nightmarish lighting, to the gruesome, greenish, tint in one of the nastiest scenes.

Audition revolves around Shigeharu Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi), a man whose wife died, and later after the devastation, his son encourages him to remarry. The idea then comes to light when he’s drinking with his co-worker, who proposes an “Audition” for a movie as a cover for him to find the perfect wife. That’s when he’s immediately captivated by Asami Yamazaki (Eihi Shiina). Her innocence obscures her horrifying capabilities in the pursuit of love.

You can find Audition on the following platforms: Sling TV (premium subscription), Amazon Prime Video (premium subscription), and Tubi (free).

Overall, I hope these movies can get you started on this terror-rific season. I hope with each list, there’s something for everyone. I’ll be keeping it fresh with various types of horror films to binge. Keep a lookout for next week’s horror watchlist!

With that said, I hope my insight has enlightened you and I’d love to talk about things horror and more! If you’d like to see more of my content or would like to contact me, you can find me on  Instagram or Twitter. You may also email me at jrnw99@gmail.com if you prefer.
