Saint Xavier University has begun the 2013-2014 Film Series! This year’s theme is Film and Music.

According to Associate Proffesor Allison Fraunhar, Saint Xavier is home to the second longest running film series in Chicago. “It began sometime in the 1950s, and we’re really proud of the lost history of the film series at Saint Xavier University.”
“Different faculty members have run the series over the years, and it has been run by the faculty of the art department for a long time.”

The films are specifically picked for their value in relation to the theme, and their overall value and entertainment as well.

The films air in McGuire Hall, at 7 p.m. The first film that was aired was “A Hard Day’s Night”, a comedy that portrayed a few days in the life of the Beatles. It was a huge success in it’s era, and it made the list of the 100 best films of all time. It was a precursor to rock viceos today and how they integrate music into action.
The next film that will be aired is called “Tous les matins du monde”, which translates to “All the Mornings of the World”.

It stars Gerard Depardieu, a famous French actor. The film is about a 17th century musician and composer, and will be played with subtitles. It will air on Tuesday, October 15.

“The films have tremendous historical and esthetic value in addititon to being very powerful and entertaining as well.” said Fraunhar.

Although generally Hollywood films are included, the emphasis is on films from around the world, and specifically films that are not contemporary, to give the viewers an opportunity to see films today that they wouldn’t be able to see at a multiplex.
Last year’s film series was about Painting and Film, and include films about painters such as Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock, and Jean Michel Basquiat.
Previous themes of the film series included: Film and the Environment, Film and Women, and Film and Childhood.

The event is free and open to the public, and it takes place once a month, excluding December and March.
