Junior guard Brad Karp from the Saint Xavier University men’s basketball team has been named the World Hyundai-Saint Xavier December Athlete of the Month. Karp, a native of Valparaiso, Ind., led the Cougars to an 8-1 record in the month of December and received many accolades for his production.
Karp was named the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) player of the week three out of the four weeks in the month and he also led SXU to a perfect 3-0 record in the annual Saint Xavier Midwest Tournament. The Cougars defeated Robert Morris (Ill.), Saint Ambrose (Iowa) and Marian (Ind.) to claim the 2012 SXU Midwest Championship.
Following the championship victory, Karp was named the tournament’s most valuable player (MVP) after he averaged a double-double in the tournament with 23.7 points per game and 10.7 rebounds per game.
The lone loss for Saint Xavier was against No.7 ranked (NAIA Division I) Westminster College of Salt Lake City (Utah) by three points, 73-70, in the opening game of a four-team tournament hosted by Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif. SXU bounced right back by defeating William Jessup University (Calif.), 87-58, in the consolation game of the tournament.
Karp was a man on a mission in the game against WJU when he posted 37 points and 13 rebounds in the winning effort. Karp was just two points shy of his career-high 39 points that he scored against Robert Morris University (Ill.) on February 4, 2012.
Karp was publicly recognized with a certificate from World Hyundai-Matteson right before the Cougars took on CCAC foe Holy Cross College (Ind.) at 3 p.m. at the Shannon Center in Chicago on Saturday, January, 4.
