Senior runner Rachael Dean from the Saint Xavier University women’s track team has been named the February World Hyundai-Saint Xavier Athlete of the Month after her fantastic month. Dean, a nursing major at Saint Xavier, broke a school record at the 2013 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships held in Geneva, Ohio, back during Nationals the week of February 28 – March 2.
Dean finished fourth in the indoor mile en route to a new school record time of 5:01.97. In addition to breaking the school record, Dean was also recognized with All-American honors following the National Championships. Dean double dipped at the National Championships as she also participated in the distance medley relay (DMR) and assisted the team in finishing 10th with another school record time of 12:20.76.
Dean began the month of February by qualifying for the aforementioned National Championships after she ran the indoor mile in an “A” standard qualifying time of 5:06.07. The event was hosted by Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill., back on February 2. The Keck Invitational was the fourth meet of the indoor track season and Dean made the most of it and qualified for Nationals.
Dean, a native of Lindenhurst, Ill., has led Saint Xavier throughout her career and in the month of February, she continued to add more accolades to her resume. With her All-American distinction at this year’s National Championships, Dean has been named an All-American for both cross country and track a total of six times.
The outdoor track season is set to kick off on Thursday, March 28, in Goshen, Ind. The first meet of the season is the Goshen College Track and Field Invite, as the outdoor track season gets underway.
