From some of the leading headlines world wide, here are some news stories that you should know.

 

United States

As of October 1, 2013, the United States government has been shut down, due to not agreeing on a new budget. There will be more than 700,000 federal employees that will be going without pay until the shutdown is over. And even then, there is no guarantee they will receive back up pay.

 

Kenya

After the Kenyan shooting at Westgate mall, several inter-faith prayers were held by various religious groups for its 67 victims. Its President Uhuru Kenyatta thought this would start rift among its citizens.

 

Australia

On October 1, 2013, Gina Rinehart, Australia’s wealthiest citizen, wishes for to relinquish control over a billion-dollar family trust to stop a feud with her children.  This comes after she has been accused of “act[ing] ‘deceitfully’ and with ‘gross dishonestly’ in how she managed the trust”.

 

Venezuela

On Monday, September 30, three US diplomats have been expelled from the country due to ‘sabotage’ their economy.  According to its President Nicolas Maduro, he said that “the diplomats have 48 hours to leave the country.” This sabotage allegation is due to shortages that Venezuela is face, with key items such as toilet paper, flour, and sugar.

 

South Korea

After a decade, South Korea displayed its collection of missiles at a parade, as of Tuesday, October 1. This act comes from the President Park Guen-hye saying that North Korea posed a very “grave threat”. US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is currently in the country, and also attended the South Korean Armed Forces’ 65th anniversary, which coincided with this.
