KABUL, AFGHANISTAN (CNN)- On Monday, a powerful earthquake shook northeastern Afghanistan as well as affecting people in Pakistan, India, and Tajikistan.
Dozens of people were killed and many structures were collapsed.
Early reports from the Pakistani, Indian, and Afghan officials said that the amount of deaths reported was around 229 people and hundreds of people were injured. The earthquake’s magnitude was measured at a 7.5 which comes very close to the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that killed over 70,000 people in Kashmir in 2005.
The reason that this earthquake did not cause as many deaths as the 2005 quake is because it happened 139 miles below the earth’s surface.
OUTER SPACE (CNN)- Currently in outer space, every minute, there is a comet named Comet Lovejoy that is pumping out the amount of alcohol that is the equivalent to 500 bottles of wine.
This is the first time that a comet has been observed pushing out ethyl alcohol, which is the same type of alcohol that is found in alcoholic beverages. According to Nicolas Biver of the Paris Observatory in France, it is also leaving a type of sugar behind along with its alcohol.
Scientists used a 100-foot diameter radio telescope in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Spain to observe the comet and to determine that it was indeed partly composed of alcohol and sugar.
GUATEMALA (CNN)- In Guatemala, there will soon be some comic relief for their head of state as the former comedian, Jimmy Morales, is anticipated to become Guatemala’s next Presidents.
The preliminary election returns showed that Morales won more than 69% of the votes from the 93% of the polling stations that have been counted. The second official behind him is the former first lady Sandra Torres with 31% of the votes.
While people may be skeptical of his ability to run a country, his response was clear.“I have been asked if we have the capacity to govern, and we have been emphatic in saying that alone – no – but with the blessing of God, and the support of the people, we are sure that yes, we can. Because Guatemala has made a choice that it wants a change,” said Morales.
