VATICAN CITY (AFP)– A Polish priest that was a high ranking employee of the Vatican came out as a homosexual on Saturday on the eve of a bishops’ synod. The synod was scheduled to talk about the disruptive issue of the Catholic Church and homosexual believers.
The priest, Krzystof Charamsa, came out because he wanted to speak out against the hypocrisy of the Church’s attitudes towards homosexuals. “I want to be an advocate for all sexual minorities and their families who have suffered in silence,” said Charamsa.
Charamsa was immediately relieved of his job as a theologian at the Vatican.
CHERNOBYL (BBC)– Wild mammals are beginning to return to the radioactive zone that surrounds the damaged nuclear reactor in Chernobyl. The area that they are returning to has been evacuated of all humans and is considered an exclusion zone.
According to a long-term census of the area’s mammals, there are even more wildlife creatures living there before the accident occurred. Jim Smith, professor of the University of Portsmouth was the lead of the study and said, “This does not mean that radiation is good for wildlife.
It’s just that the effects of human habitation, including hunting, farming, and forestry, are a lot worse.”
GUATEMALA (Reuters)- A mudslide killed 137 people on Thursday just outside of Guatemala City in Santa Catarina Pinula. As of Monday, at least 300 people were unaccounted for according to emergency services chief Alejandro Maldonado.
An entire neighborhood was engulfed in a deep ravine causing rescue workers to have to descend 39 feet in order to reach just the roofs of homes. According to Sergio Cabanas, an official at Conred disaster agency, “Some died from the impact, some from asphyxiation and some from heart attacks.
USA (CNN)– On Monday, an American Airlines pilot died during a flight from Phoenix to Boston.The flight had been landed safely in Syracuse, NY by the copilot. An exact cause of death was not released, only that the pilot died from illness.
There were 147 passengers and five crew members on the flight. No other illness or injuries were reported.
