CUBA (Reuters)- Pope Francis visited east Cuba on Monday for Mass, making him the first Pope to visit Holguin, Cuba. Holguin is where former Cuban rulers Raul and Fidel grew up.
Pope Francis has been assisting the Communist rulers’ reconciliation with the United States. The U.S. still has an economic embargo against Cuba which started in 1962.
EGYPT (AP)- Egypt has a newly elected President, Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi and is planning on putting the government to work by combating corruption, ensuring the return of security, and to improve the country’s dilapidated economy.
The new president brings in with him 13 new members of the Cabinet. The previous freely elected president Mohammed Morsi had many supporters. Those that supported Morsi are conducting almost daily demonstrations against the government in his honor.
JAPAN (CNN)- In Japan, controversial bills have been approved by the upper chamber of Parliament which will allow the country’s military to engage in overseas combat. This is a dramatic shift from Japan’s 70 years of pacifism. The Japanese military, or Self-Defense Forces’, role will be limited, but they will be allowed to defend allies in conflicts abroad.
NEW ZEALAND (CNN)- In New Zealand, an experienced zoo keeper has died after being attacked by one of the zoo’s Sumatran tigers named Oz. The zoo will not put down the tiger. “There is no wider ongoing risk. […] Oz’s attack on Samantha was in line with his natural instincts,” said Hamilton City Council’s general manager for parks and other leisure services.
Sumatran tigers are a critically endangered species from Indonesia, less than 400 remain. Oz has fathered two cubs, making him vital to conserving the species.
ALABAMA (CNN)- In Alabama, three people were shot in a church on Sunday, including a newborn baby. The shooter, 26 year old James Junior Minter, shot his baby’s mother, her newborn, and the pastor.
All three victims are in stable condition. Authorities believe the motives for the shooting may have something to do with ongoing domestic violence or child visitation rights.
