The women’s volleyball team made history last Tuesday night with their win against Trinity International University (Ill.)
With this victory, the Cougars are off to the best start in the history of the program with a record of 9-1. They just edged out their previous best start record of 8-1, set last year.
The women had no problem setting this new mark, easily defeating Trinity International in three sets with scores of 25-12, 25-18 and 25-22 to win the match.
A trio of seniors led the way for Saint Xavier in kills. Kayla Mullaney, an outside hitter, had nine kills Tuesday night, while middle blocker Colleen O’Hara and outside hitter Kelly Knudsen each had eight.
Freshman right side Meghan Falsey also added eight kills throughout the night.
The women also had an impressive number of service aces on Tuesday with O’Hara, Knudsen, and Desiree Aramburu, a senior setter, each serving two.
Aramburu also led the team with 24 assists throughout the match.
On the defensive side, senior libero Christine Bowe, Knudsen and Aramburu all played tough. Bowe led the team with eleven digs while Knudsen dug up nine balls and Aramburu dug up seven.
Looking to improve upon their best start of the season, the Cougars went up against undefeated Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) last Wednesday night at Lee Lohman Arena in Davenport, Iowa.
Despite many strong performances, the women lost to Saint Ambrose in three sets with scores of 19-25, 24-26 and 18-25, making their record 9-2 for the season.
Saint Ambrose edged out the Cougars in number of kills posting 46 to Saint Xavier’s 38.
Kayla Mullaney continued to play tough offensively posting ten kills throughout the match.
Meghan Falsey and Kelly Knudsen also contributed offensively with nine and seven kills respectively.
Desiree Aramburu played great all around and finished the night with three kills, 23 assists and 9 digs.
As of September 17, 2012, the Cougars are currently ranked first in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) with St. Francis, Trinity Christian and Cardinal Stritch taking the number two, three and four spots, respectively.
The Cougars are currently 2-0 in conference matches and look to continue their undefeated conference record this Tuesday, September 18 when they go on the road to face Robert Morris University. (Ill.)
The women also hit the road on Thursday, September 20 to play against another CCAC member, Roosevelt University.
