After a tough competition a couple weeks ago at the AQ/CU Classic, our women’s volleyball team has righted the ship and found themselves on a five-game winning streak.
The Cougars’ last two matches were September 24 against Governors State University, and September 27 versus Indiana University Northwest.
Saint Xavier was dominant from start to finish against GSU, winning set one 25-23, set two 25-19, and a dominant 25-12 victory in the last set.
Senior outside hitter, Chlore Memenga, piled up 12 kills, nine digs, and three blocks, during the matches to help lead the team to its win.
Sophomore libero, Avanna Martinez, recorded five aces, a career high. She also had nine digs against GSU.
SXU held down the Jaguars the entire game, only allowing a .141 hitting percentage compared to their own of .286. This was also the third straight match where the Cougars recorded a team attack percentage of .300 or higher.
On Tuesday, SXU also beat IUN in three straight sets, winning 25-23, 25-15, and 25-22.
Junior middle blocker, Courtney Hunter, and sophomore setter, Kaleigh Ritter, helped drive the Cougars to victory.
Hunter had 10 kills on a .444 attack percentage along with two blocks.
This was Hunter’s fourth time this season where she had 10 or more kills in a match.
Ritter continues her strong season after recording a team-leading ninth double-double. She finished with 27 assists, 14 digs, and a kill.
SXU is looking to continue their hot streak, with four of their next six matches being against CCAC opponents, and they have the right formula to win.
One of the team’s managers, Avery Jedry, said the team is a “perfect example” of what Saint Xavier is about.
“Teamwork, leadership, drive, and passion are just a few of the things these women show both on and off the court”.
The Cougars play their next game at Calumet College of St. Joseph in Whiting, Indiana, September 29 at 7p.
