The SXU Women’s Volleyball team entered this week with a bit of momentum. Last week, they won two of their three games and improved their record from 1-5 to 3-6 in the process. The Cougars started the week by playing the Governors State Jaguars at the Shannon Center.
The Jaguars entered the game with a 2-12 record. The first set started off with a very back and forth affair, with neither team ever getting a distinct advantage. That was until a series of errors from the Jaguars allowed the Cougars to grab a 18-14 lead.
Despite a few attempts at a comeback from the Jaguars, SXU held on and won the first set 25-22. The second set started off kind of slow, with neither team breaking out. That was until a barrage of attack errors from the Cougars allowed Governors State to grab a 18-9 lead. It was all but over from there as the Cougars fell in the second set 25-14. Saint Xavier stormed back in the third set, Taking a 20-12 lead at one point.
The Cougars stood tall and closed out the set, eventually winning 25-18. The fourth set was not even close, as the Jaguars completely dominated SXU, eventually winning 25-16. The fifth and final set was a tense one, with both teams neck and neck for most of it.
However, Governors State managed to pull ahead at the last minute, thanks to some timely serviced aces. Despite a few errors, the Jaguars managed to hold on and win the final set and the game, 15-13. The Cougars fell to 3-7 with the loss, while Governors State improved to 3-12 with the win.
Saint Xavier then travelled to Kokomo, Indiana to play the Indiana University-Kokomo Cougars. Kokomo entered the game with a 9-5 record. The first set was almost completely dominated by Kokomo, with the Cougars only having a few flashes of offense.
The set eventually ended with IU-Kokomo winning 25-18. The second set started off with a small SXU comeback, but that was quickly shut down by IU-Kokomo’s offense, who took over and won the second set 25-20.
The third and final set was a hard fought affair, with both teams battling to either force another set(in SXU’s case), or to end the game, in IU-Kokomo’s case. However, it was the IU-Kokomo Cougars who won the set and close out the game with 25-21. IU-Kokomo improved to 10-5 with the win, while Saint Xavier fell to 3-8 with the loss.
The Cougars have a busy week upcoming week, as they participate in the Holiday Inn Express Invitational in Bourbonnais, Illinois. Saint Xavier will play the Columbia Cougars, the Friends University Falcons, and the Campbellsville Tigers all in the span of two days; from September 27th to September 28th. The Cougars may have had a disappointing week. Yet, they have a very good chance of turning things around if they play well in the Holiday Inn Express Invitational next week in Bourbonnais.
