Women’s Volleyball Clinches CCAC Title!

The Women’s volleyball regular season is coming to a close in the coming week and are ending it on a high note after sealing the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship.

With their regular season title, SXU earned an automatic berth into the NAIA Women’s Volleyball Opening Round, taking place Saturday, November 19.

They have one more game before the CCAC Tournament begins on November 8.

In addition to the big wins, sophomore setter, Kaleigh Ritter, was named CCAC Women’s Volleyball Setter of the Week. She dished out 116 assists, averaging 11.6 assists per set, and totaled 22 digs.

The Cougars took on Calumet College of St. Joseph, Roosevelt University, and Saint Ambrose University this last week, winning all three games and improving their record to 20-7.

SXU took on CCSJ October 27 on their ‘Family & Senior Night’.

In a pregame ceremony, the team honored their six seniors for their dedication to the program.

Congratulations to Molly Hackett, Alexandra Wis, Kellylyn Kotowski, Chloe Memenga, Maria Gutierrez, and Nicole Dvorak for outstanding careers at SXU!

The Cougars won three straight sets, with scores of 25-21, 25-15, and 25-22.

Hackett led the team with kills in the game with 16. She also had 13 digs, two assists, one block, and a service ace.

Junior middle blocker, Courtney Hunter, also reached double-digits in kills with 10, in addition to a solo block.

Freshman setter, Katie DeHaan, put together a good game, tallying five digs, two service aces, and an assist.

The Cougars (.271) had a much better hitting percentage than the Crimson Wave (.153), despite the closeness of sets one and three.

A short turnaround brought the Cougars to Roosevelt’s home court as they hoped to keep the ball rolling.

And keep the ball rolling they did!

Despite trailing for most of the first set, the Cougars rallied behind a kill from Kotowski, followed by an ace from Wis. Hunter locked down the first set with huge back-to-back kills that lit a fire under the team.

They fought back to win the first set 28-26, and piled on to win 25-13 in sets two and three.

Hackett kept up her hot play by leading the team in kills again with 12. She also tied with sophomore libero, Avanna Martinez, for the team’s high nine digs.

Ritter compiled quite the stat line dishing out a match-high 30 assists, in addition to four digs, two aces, one block, and a kill.

The first of the month brought SXU to their last away game in the regular season in Davenport, IA, against St. Ambrose.

This game went a full five sets, SXU having to fight back from down two sets to one.

The scores of the sets were 25-23 , 14-25, 16-25, 25-19, and 15-8.

Memenga led the team in kills with 16 and Hackett finished right behind her with 14, which included the game-winning kill in the final set.

Martinez had 20 digs in the game, the fourth time this season she has recorded 20 or more digs in a match.

In the fifth set Kotowski had three straight service aces to virtually seal the victory and Hackett recorded four kills, including the game winning kill.

The Cougars last regular season game takes place tomorrow, November 3, at the Shannon Center. The game is scheduled for a 7p start time.
