Tuesday, October 20th
On this day, the Cougars had a game against Roosevelt University which saw the Cougars dominate all three sets. The first set saw the Cougars establish themselves early, starting with a 10-5 lead early in the game.
From here, the Cougars never let up as they went on to win the set 25-16. Set two saw a closer knit game then the first, but some clutch play by junior blocker Melanie Miller and her match best 12 kills led the Cougars to another set victory at 25-17.
Smelling blood in the water, the Cougars seemed anxious to go for the kill (PUN!) on their prey. To put a final end to their opponents and assure victory for themselves, the Cougars went on an 8-1 run to put them up 24-13.
In the end, the cougars won the set at 25-14, and the match winning all three games. CCAC Crossover Tournament Friday, October 23- Saturday, October 24. The weekend is here, and that means another tournament for the Cougar volleyball team.
Fresh off their victory against Roosevelt University, and ready to avenge their performance at the last tournament in which they went 1-4, the Cougars were ready to pounce on the competition at this two day tournament.
Who would stand as the first matchup for the Cougars? None other than University-South Bend of Indiana. Would the Cougars show their ready to win? Or would South Bend prove to be too much of a force for them?
Set one started off with the Cougars going on a 13-3 run dominating the opposition early. This lead was behind senior Meghan Falsey’s strong play, attaining four kills in this set alone. In the end, the Cougars asserted their dominance early winning the set 25-13.
Not letting up on University of South Bend, the Cougars 21-12 lead behind a dominating11-3 run. South Bend would go on a run of their own cutting the game to as close as 21-16, but the Cougars would close out this set with another victory at a score of 25-16.
With only one more set needed to be won to be able to win the matchup, the Cougar came ready to play. South Bend came ready to play as well as they seemed intent on forcing another set. So intent that they went on a crushing 10-2 run that eventually propelled them to a victory at 25-17.
Realizing that IUSB was starting to pick up momentum, the Cougars knew they had to play their hearts out in set four to win matchup and avoid a potential upset. Play their little hearts out they did as the Cougars won the set at 25-11, and won their matchup 3 games to 1.
Moving on to their second day of competition, the Cougars were eager to capitalize off the momentum from their last victory. Their next matchup would be against University of Saint Francis.
Set one saw the Cougars jumped off to a comfortable 12-4 lead, but seemed to get too comfortable as USF rocketed back on an 8-1 run to put them up 21-19. The game was becoming close, and both teams increased the intensity to avoid the loss. At the end of the set, it would be USF coming out on top.
Despite the early deficit they faced, USF was still able to come back and win the set 25-21. The second set was as close as the first as both teams seemed to be an equal challenge for each other.
The two teams were neck and neck with each other for the better part of the game. Eventually, USF started to pull away, and they would never look back. USF won this close set with a score of 25-19.
Fearing a being swept in the matchup the Cougars played their hardest in set three. This set went all the way from the buzzer to the final play in the set it was so close. Although the Cubs were unable to avoid a sweep, at least the Cougars were; winning the set at 25-23.
Able to force a fourth set, would the Cougars be able to force another game to potentially win this competitive matchup? No. It was close, but USF couldn’t allow another set win by the Cougars, closing this matchup out with a set victory of 25-22 and matchup victory of 3 games to 1.
While the Cougars didn’t win this matchup, there was still one last matchup for them to fish for another victory. This matchup would be against North Central. Set one was close throughout, but the Cougars were able to pull in the end; winning the set with a score of 25-15.
The second set was just as close as the first. This set came down to the wire, but a clutch kill by freshman Alex Lambros sealed the set victory for the Cougars at 25-23. The third set would prove to be the final one as the Cougars were able to win the matchup behind the strong play of freshman Alex Lambros (13 kills) and senior Meghan
Falsey (10 kills) leading the Cougars to a 25-19 set victory, and a matchup victory of 3 games to none. For the week, the Cougars finished 3-1. Let’s continue to show support for the girls’ volleyball team as they look to face Judson University Tuesday, October 27.
