The Saint Xavier women’s soccer team concluded a disappointing season on Nov. 4 with a 1-nil loss to Robert Morris University.
The match took place at home, but the Cougars could not use that to their advantage.
It was Saint Xavier’s fifth-straight loss to end the season. The Cougars’ last win came on Oct. 15 in a 5-0 drubbing of the Calumet College of Saint Joseph.
It was also Saint Xavier’s third-straight game in which they could not tally a goal.
With the loss, the Cougars fell to 4-11-3 on the season overall, including a 3-7-1 mark in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
As a result of their record, the Cougars were not eligible for play in the CCAC tournament. It was the second year in a row that the Cougars did not play in the conference tournament.
Senior goalkeeper Danielle Koncius got the start on senior day and played well, making five stops on six shots faced. The one goal she allowed, though, proved to be costly.
Koncius finds herself in the top-10 in save percentage, goals against average and most shutouts.
The Cougars got the better scoring chances in the match, racking up 17 shots (12 on goal). Of Robert Morris’s nine shots, six were on net.
But in the 88th minute, the Eagles made their best scoring chance count. Cindi Chavez got off a shot from five yards out to beat Koncius.
When the Cougars could not respond in the last two minutes, their fate was sealed.
Among the seniors who played their final match against the Eagles were Koncius, midfielders Cassie Pullia, Monica Chavolla, Danielle Inzinga and Morgan and Marissa Graves, defender Shannon Spethman and forward Anita Balciunas.
Though their senior season did not go as planned, their careers were successful ones.
