The team got a magnificent performance from freshman goalkeeper Alex Perry, who recorded nine saves for the Cougars. It was her first win as a collegiate goalkeeper, and it came in front of an excited home crowd at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.
She had to wait a while, though, as strong thunderstorms in the area forced a two-hour rain delay. But once the delay was over, the Cougars were ready and able to take down the tough Griffins.
The team didn’t generate much offense on the day with only two shots on goal but luckily one of those shots got past the keeper.
In the minute No. 49, the Cougars capitalized when junior midfielder Monica Chavolla sent a great kick into the box where it was punched in by fellow junior Morgan Graves.
That was all the offense the Cougars would need, as their defense locked up the Griffins. It was a great win for the Cougars in front of their home crowd.
The Cougars went through another first over the holiday weekend by losing their first game of the season at home to MidAmerica Nazarene University 2-0.
The Cougars struggled on offense again, managing just three shots on goal against the Pioneers.
MidAmerica Nazarene University struck early in the minute No. 17 with a goal from junior foward Ellaisa Marquis and then again early in the second half with header from senior defender Kara Quinn off of a corner kick.
The Cougars were led by junior midfielders Danielle Inzinga and Chavolla, who each had a shot on goal.
The Cougars fell to 1-1-1 on the year after weekend play at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field, where they will play again in two weeks.
After a three game road trip, the team returns for the next home game on September 25 against University of Saint Francis (Ill.), so remember to go out and support the team.
