On September 12, the Saint Xavier women’s soccer team lost in a close game against Davenport University. There was no scoring in the first half of this game, but you could see that the Cougars were in control of the first half.
The highlight of the first half was when the Cougars had two shots on goal within two minutes of each other, making it seem as if they would eventually breakthrough in the second half.
That would not happen, however, as the second half started horribly for the Cougars as starting goalkeeper Carly Bledsoe would get a red card in the 48 minute of the game, forcing backup goalie Alex Perry to play most of the second half.
She ended up being a bright spot for the Cougars, excelling in relief of Bledsoe for most of the second half. However, she could not shut out Davenport as they scored in the 79 minute to make the score 1-0.
The Cougars got one more opportunity to score in the 85 minute on a shot by Gabbie Risolvato, but Davenport goalkeeper, Tara Gessler, once again made the save and give her team a 1-0 win.
Both Bledsoe and Perry were outstanding in net, combining to save 9 of the 10 shots that were on goal. However, their goalie Gessler was just a little bit better with a seven save clean sheet. With the loss, the Cougars record falls to 1-4.
They will get another chance to win at home against Bethel College on September 16.
