The Saint Xavier women’s soccer team traveled to Hammond, Indiana to take on Purdue University-Northwest in a CCAC matchup on Saturday, September 24. The difference was a Julia Gawlak goal in the 54th minute to give the Cougars their first victory of the season.
The much needed win lifts a heavy burden off the collective backs of the women, as they started the season 0-6-1 prior to last Saturday’s game. The win improves their conference record to 1-1-0 on the year.
Senior goaltender Alex Perry recorded her second shutout on the 2016 season by preventing four Purdue University-Northwest shots on target from getting to the back of the net.
The game-winner by Gawlak was assisted by Brittany Kroening on a pretty cross to the center of the box. Kroening compiled two of the Cougars’ four total shots on goal in the contest.
When they needed her most, Alex Perry came up large with two of her four saves coming in the final 36 minutes of regulation to keep the score 1-0 in Saint Xavier’s favor.
The Cougars totaled seven shots, four on goal, and kept all four Purdue Northwest shots on goal out. Purdue Northwest finished with 12 shots on the day, but failed to keep out the decisive game winner.
Saint Xavier will take on University of Saint Francis Wednesday, September 28, at home starting at 6:00 PM. The Fighting Saints boast a 3-3-1 record on the season and sit 2-1 in CCAC play.
