Women-Owned Businesses Within 5 Miles of SXU’s Campus

Happy March, Cougars! With all of the celebrations going on at this time of the year, do not forget that it also happens to be Women’s History Month. Here are three delicious women-owned businesses near campus you can support not only now, but for the times to come.

Sazone’s Fresh Latín Cuisine

Looking for a place to get a great meal with a sweet dessert? Sazone’s is the place to go! They serve Latin cuisine with halal meats and a menu full of Puerto Rican foods. This women-owned establishment also is a cute, photo-worthy spot with friendly staff ready to help.

Pictured above, I was able to try the Chicken Mofongo meal with a salad and rice. Mofongo is a Puerto-Rican dish that is made with plantains mashed together with other ingredients and, in this case, topped with chicken as the meat. I also tried a regular Tres Leches Cake slice. As someone who has only ever tried the SXU diner Tres Leches, this was incredible. The meal was amazing and filling, but the cake brought everything to a whole new level. If you check out Sazone’s, be sure to try one of their dessert options.

Sazone’s also serves other dinners, sandwiches, tacos, burritos, empanadas, mocktails, cupcakes, and more. For a full menu, click here.

They are located at 11111 S Harlem Avenue Unit C in Worth, Illinois. They are open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 11 AM to 9 PM;

Fridays from 11 AM to 10 PM; Sundays from 11 AM to 8 PM; and they are closed on Mondays.

AndySunflower Café

Next up on the list is a women-owned, black-owned café. AndySunflower was founded by Andrea O. Robinson in 2019 as a mobile business that has since expanded to be located inside of the Beverly Ain’t She Sweet Café location. She has a true passion for coffee and the way it brings people together, as her business does each and every day.

During my visit, as pictured above, I ordered a Magic Maple Latte, which is one of Andy’s Signature drinks. The latte combined maple and cinnamon flavors for a wonderful result that reminded me of fall. Plus, it is a vegan-friendly option! This is a drink I will be sure to order again and is one of my favorites I have tried so far near campus.

AndySunflower also serves other lattes, coffees, teas, and pastries. Some specialty latte flavors include the Bananas Foster, Chocobutter, Pistach-Yum-O, Rosy Rose, and The Bourbon. Their Peach Mint Tea is seasonal, but listed as a fan favorite. For their full menu, click here.

They are located at 9920 S Western Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. AndySunflower is open from 8 AM to 3 PM Tuesday through Friday, 8 AM to 2 PM on Saturday, and they are closed Sundays and Mondays.

Ain’t She Sweet Café

 Last on the list for this week is Ain’t She Sweet Café, the very place that AndySunflower Café is located inside of. They were founded and are owned by Margo Strotter, who believes in only the best quality for her business. The menu is full of options that are fresh and healthy for their customers.

Pictured above, I tried the Grilled Chicken Cheddar sandwich (without onions). The sandwich consisted of grilled chicken, turkey ham, turkey bacon, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, and giardiniera peppers on a croissant.  It also came with either a bag of chips or a side of soup. I tried Joe’s Grapefruit Lemonade as well. Everything was amazing and did not taste fried like a lot of the food found at restaurants and fast food joints.

The menu includes a long list of other sandwich options, wraps, paninis, soups, salads, fresh smoothies, ice cream, and other treats. For the full list and more details, click here.

They are also located at 9920 S Western Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. There is a second location at 526 E. 43rd Street in Chicago, Illinois. The Beverly location, the first address, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 AM to 6 PM. They are closed Sundays and Mondays.
