SXU Women’s Basketball Week in Review

Saint Xavier Women’s Basketball had an impressive week winning both of their games by over 45 points to stay undefeated in conference play. The week started at home on Wednesday against the struggling Trinity Christian Troll who had only five wins going into the game.

The Trolls scored first by splitting a pair of free throws. This would end up being their only lead of the game. The rest of the first quarter was all SXU as they would hit eight three pointers on their way to a 38-12 first quarter lead. This dominance would continue for the rest of the game with the Cougars controlling everything wire to wire en route to a 47 point victory.

Saint Xavier outplayed Trinity Christian in almost every facet of the game. They finished with a better field goal percentage, better three point percentage, more rebounds, more assists and even had 44 more points off of turnovers.

The one area in which the Cougars could improve on was shooting from the charity stripe. Saint Xavier went 4 for 11 from the free throw line on Wednesday. The game was a blowout so it did not have any impact on the game, but had it been close this could have caused some real damage for SXU.

In terms of individual performances, it is hard to look past the game that Maddie Welter had. She scored 30 points, all on three pointers and went 10 for 17 shooting.

The Cougars next game would see them go on the road to Gary, Indiana where they would play Indiana Northwest. This test would be much harder for the Cougars than the Trinity game because the Redhawks had a  7-5 record at home going into Saturday.

The first quarter was very back and forth at the start with both teams being tied at eight with less than half the quarter to play. The Cougars then outscored the Redhawks 13-6 in the last 3 and a half minutes to end the quarter up seven.

The second quarter started with quick buckets by both teams. The Redhawks began slowly chipping away at the lead before Saint Xavier went on another end of the quarter run.

This time, the Cougars found themselves on a 13 to 4 run to end the half. This would give them a 13 point lead, which they would not give up for the entirety of the second half.

The third quarter is where SXU would show off just how dominant of a team they are. Early in the quarter, SXU made some three pointers and saw their lead grow to 19.

Indiana Northwest would respond with a made field goal of their own. From this point on in the third quarter, SXU would take control, not giving up a single basket and scoring 18 straight points.

This run put the game out of reach and saw Saint Xavier extend their lead to 35. The fourth quarter would be more of the same and SXU would win 92-47.

Maddie Welter was yet again the start of the game. This time she made seven threes for 21 points.

Another key contributor for the Cougars was Claire Austin. Austin had an impressive 15 point 13 rebound double-double.

Next week, the Cougars will have a chance to extend their conference record to 20-0. They play at Trinity International on Wednesday at 5:30. They then go on the road where they will play Holy Cross College on Saturday.
