Why We Should All See Live Theater

The beautiful sets, shining lights, and breathtaking music of live theater has always created a captivating experience for many people.

Beautiful works of theater are a form of entertainment that people have been enjoying for ages. However, with the rise of short-form media, people have forgotten how wonderful it can be to sit down and enjoy a live show.

This past weekend, I was lucky enough to see the national tour of “Les Miserables” downtown. It was a very special experience for me, as this show is very near and dear to my heart.

The nearly-three-hour phenomenon is sure to keep your attention the entire time as the story progresses from one of loss, to one of war, and finally, one of love.

Sitting in the historic Cadillac Palace, I felt myself being transported into the story. As I set my sights onto the scene before me, I could feel all of my worries float away, almost as if they were being carried away by the melodies that were coming from the pit and stage.

For those three hours, I was focused on the characters’ issues, so I was able to forget my own. I was distracted. You may be wondering what’s so special about a theatrical distraction when a movie, tv show, or YouTube video can have the same effect.

The special thing about theater is that it is live and in front of you. That adds a special human touch to what you are witnessing. Of course, the actors of a movie or tv show had to film their programs, and they are also living people; but there is something about seeing actors right there in front of you that is so special.

Seeing these talented actors sing, dance, profess their love for each other, and even die on stage is very unique. It is so unique because, as an audience member, you feel as if you are connected to them somehow.

When you see their tears fall on stage, you realize that what you are witnessing is real.

When you’re in the middle of “Les Miserables” and you see the giant barricade appear on stage, you know that it isn’t a green screen or special effects. You see that barricade, and you know that a group of people spent countless hours putting it together and the actors spent another set of countless hours learning how to maneuver around it.

When you see live theater, you experience the work of hundreds of people. You get to appreciate the many months of labor that was put into crafting performances so that you, one of the many people in the audience, can forget your worries for a few hours.

The work that goes into creating theater is daunting and anything but luxurious.

It involves the combination of many different skills from people with totally different backgrounds. It takes the dedication of the actors and musicians to perform at the top of their game a minimum of eight times a week.

So, please, take a moment to enjoy some live theater. It doesn’t have to be a fully professional production; it can be a local or community-centered one. Regardless, it is guaranteed to be a magical and unforgettable experience.
