As the new semester settles in, more and more RSOs will begin to post their fall events. A few common phrases new students will hear is “get involved, join RSOs, go to events.” However, the editorial board believes that perhaps we should explain why this is emphasized so much.

College is different from high school in the sense that there will be days where you won’t get home until late at night. Sometimes you’ll have large gaps in between classes, and in the worst case scenario you may not have a car and have to wait for other forms of transportation. For others, you may live on campus full time and not know what to do outside of class.

RSOs and campus events are a great way to fill these gaps; many members of the board can attest to this.

One member of the board noted how RSO events had a positive effect on them as someone who dorms.

“As someone who lives on campus, I appreciate the hard work these RSOs put into making these events happen. It gives us the opportunity to get out of our dorms for a bit and enjoy a little break from work. It’s also a great way to meet new people outside of class.”

Every member of the editorial board agrees that becoming more involved has made campus life more fulfilling.

A member detailed their experience last fall semester on this, “I used to sit in the diner during my breaks not knowing what to do. I felt really bored, especially when I had no more assignments that day. I ended up going to random events I saw on posters around campus, they were way more fun than I expected.”

Beyond alleviating boredom, something we believe is one of the greater outcomes of these RSOs/ RSO events is the opportunity to meet new people and bond with fellow peers. You never know who you’ll meet—a stranger can become your closest ally.

“I think RSO events are beneficial for students. It gives them the opportunity to connect with and meet other students. I’ve made so many friends by attending,” said another member of the board.

Campus can be lonely. It is a feeling we are all familiar with, and we the board empathize with deeply. So again, we are telling you to listen to those around you. Saint Xavier University is a school that is fun if you allow it to be.

Every member of the editorial board will tell you that becoming involved has changed all of our lives for the better.

“Before joining student media, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I didn’t even know what major I wanted to pursue,” said one member.

“By joining the paper I’ve found my home on campus, and I hope everyone else can find their home too,” said another.

All this is to say, we want you to enjoy SXU to its fullest extent. It can provide some of the fondest years of your life.
