On the morning of Friday, Sept. 27, legendary actress Dame Maggie Smith passed away at the age of 89 from undisclosed causes.

Smith had an extensive acting career, being a winner of two Academy Awards, five BAFTA’s, four Emmy’s, and numerous other awards.

Some of the most well known projects she has acted in include the entirety of the “Harry Potter” franchise and the critically acclaimed television series, “Downton Abbey.”

She is perhaps best known as “Professor Minerva McGonagall” in the “Harry Potter” franchise. The character is beloved worldwide, and Smith was the best possible person for the part. She always asserted dominance, and was capable of intimidating moviegoers.

Even though her performances scared her own fellow actors and actresses at times, Smith was known for having a biting sense of humor. Honestly, I can see it through “Harry Potter.” She seemed to be the kind of person who would constantly use sharp wits.

Although Smith was a very direct actress, she was known for being extremely quiet outside of her profession. She preferred to keep her personal life away from the public eye and rarely spoke about her struggles.

In 2007, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. During her treatment, she continued to act, but still put her health first.

Smith was known to be involved with various charities, including those for cancer patients, human rights, poverty, and more.

It is unfortunate to say that the big four faculty of Hogwarts have passed away. Alan Rickman (Severus Snape), Richard Harris and Michael Gambon (Albus Dumbledore), and Robbie Coltrane (Rubeus Hagrid) all passed away prior to Smith.

On the evening of Sept. 27, fans at Universal Studios parks worldwide put their wands up as tribute. She will forever be held dearly in our hearts, for nobody can replace her work.
