The St. Xavier University women’s volleyball team took on Indiana University-South Bend and Indiana University Northwest this past week, important matches leading up to the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) tournament.
Saint Xavier split the games, moving their overall record to 17-7, and their conference record going to 12-1.
The loss to IUSB was the Cougars’ first conference loss since April 1, 2021, against Trinity International University.
SXU squared off against CCAC foe, IUSB, at the Student Activities Center in South Bend, Indiana. The Cougars lost three straight sets by a combined 29 points.
The match was never particularly close, losing 25-20, 25-11, and 25-15.
Erros held St. Xavier back with twenty-seven across all three sets.
SXU holds a game and a half lead over St. Ambrose University for first place in the CCAC. Winning-out would be the best outcome for the Cougars, as third place IUSB is just two games out of first.
Despite the loss, there were strong individual performances from multiple athletes, including senior outside hitter, Nicole Dvorak, who posted a career high nine kills as well two digs.
Senior middle blocker, Alexandra Wis, put together a strong stat line in the loss. She had eight kills, four digs, an assist, and a block.
The next game took place in Gary, Indiana where the Cougars rolled past Indiana Northwest, beating them in four sets.
Despite losing the first set 25-15, St. Xavier rallied back and outscored their opponent by four, seven, and four in the next three sets.
Senior outside hitter, Molly Hackett, powered SXU to this win. She recorded 19 kills, tying her season high, as well as a season-best 15 digs.
Freshman setter, Katie DeHann, was a force to be reckoned with on defense with 13 digs. DeHann also had an assist and a kill in the Cougars’ comeback.
Sophomore setter, Kaleigh Ritter, has posted a double double in three consecutive matches. She holds the team’s high of double-doubles on the season.
The Cougars look to finish the season strong and remind the rest of their opponents what school the CCAC runs through. They have four remaining games, two away and two on their home court.
Their next game will take place on Thursday, October 27 against Calumet College of St. Joseph in the Shannon Center at 7 pm.
