The SXU shuttle bus schedule has been updated for this academic year. Several routes that were provided in the past have been eliminated. The shuttle will only offer the Warde/Visual Arts Center route and weekend service.
Jack Touhy, police chief and executive director of the department of public safety, explained to the Xavierite that the “elimination of full time shuttle drivers and several shuttle routes were a direct result of budget cut.” These cuts would serve as a cost saving measure for the university.
According to Touhy, these cuts were announced at president town hall meetings and posted on the portal since mid-August.
“Limited Shuttle service is offered for students taking classes at the Visual Arts Center, designated Visual Arts Center parking is offered for those students in lot 3 in front of Shannon Center. Additionally weekend shuttle service to area shopping centers and other attractions is offered. For shuttle service information students should check the university web page. http://www.sxu.edu/student-life/chicago/shuttle.asp,” -FY 17 Shuttle Service Announcement.
Kolin Smith, senior majoring in Graphic Design, is one of the many students that currently use the shuttle. As a resident, he has also used the shuttle bus in previous semesters.
“I don’t think it really affects me as [much as] everybody else [that] took the other routes. My route is to the VAC, which is the route that still goes on. Except on Fridays, in which the VAC runs until 3 [pm] and our club starts at 4 [pm],” said Smith.
However, with the new schedule, Smith has to either walk back or catch a ride on Fridays from the VAC after attending a campus club in the afternoon.
“I guess this is a relatively small price to pay, depending on how much debt they are standing in,” said Smith.
