On Tuesday November 29, the Unidos Registered Student Organization(RSO) hosted an informational event for interested students to learn more about the organization. The RSO had recently undergone some changes and the faculty advisors wished to make students more aware of the organization itself and of the opportunities offered by Unidos.
Karen Salgado, an RSO Advisor for Unidos, stated that “Unidos has technically always been active as an organization. The previous executive board maintained its active status through Campus Life.”
Salgado continued, “Our goal is to allow a new executive board to breathe life to this amazing RSO and to allow them to follow the mission of ‘encouraging the unity of the SXU student community through social and cultural programming with a concentration in Latin American culture’.”
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, many student organizations have had to rebuild themselves, Unidos included.
Salgado stated that “We were extremely lucky to count with the support and help of Ashley Jackson, Director of Campus Life. Once Isaac(Torres) and I decided that we wanted to approach her as Unidos RSO advisors she was more than willing to lend us her expertise.”
Salgado continued, “We were also lucky to count on the support of our student body. Once we started talking about bringing Unidos back we heard from current and former members about their experiences with this group and it made us even more excited to be part of bringing it back. It felt like a momentous occasion and one we’re happy to get to witness.”
Each student organization on campus has its own set of goals to accomplish and different events that are open to all students throughout the semester.
As for Unidos’ goals and events, Salgado stated “We don’t want to come into this new venture with a lot of goals of our own. We would like to give the new executive board reign to come up with goals for this organization that embraces their vision of Unidos and what they hope to do for their community as a whole. We will say that we hope Unidos becomes a space for our students (especially our commuter and transfer students) to find a place where they can belong and find connections with our student body as a whole. We want Unidos to be a voice that speaks for their community and builds solidarity among other organizations, already doing amazing things, such as Black Student Union and Students for Justice in Palestine.”
The events held by both the Black Student Union and Students for Justice in Palestine, such as the Annual Fashion Show and Arab Fest, respectively, and the “We Know Occupation” event co-hosted by the two organizations, created a foundation for solidarity among the communities at Saint Xavier University.
Currently, the RSO is looking for Executive Board members. Students can contact the RSO directly through email, unidos@mymail.sxu.edu, and “Applications are open until December 2nd and the applications can be found on the Den. We currently have five executive board member open positions but everyone can join as an Unidos member.”
