Understand Our Relationships With Our Pets

Many people have better relationships with their pets because it is difficult for them to relate to other people. There are many people who have difficulties socializing with others yet they feel much more comfortable with animals. Furthermore, animals never argue, claim, judge (as far as we know, nobody really knows what an animal thinks), or anything similar. For many people, it is easier to deal with a dog or a cat that could never claim anything from them, even if they wanted to.

That is, with pets there is no stress of having to meet certain standards that usually as humans we are expected to meet with other people. For example, I can treat my pet well or badly without any consequences for myself, which I cannot do with my parents, siblings, girlfriend, co-workers, etc. For this reason, for many people, it is more comfortable to deal with animals than with people, since they do not feel any type of demand.

A dog will never claim me if I am untidy, inconsiderate, boring, dumb, lazy, or even stupid.

In addition, there is the fact that many people are misanthropes, which is a social and psychological attitude characterized by general aversion to mankind. Many people think that human beings are the worst that there can be, arguing that they have behaviors that animals do not have. The reality is that people and animals are more similar than many belief. Both in the good and in the bad, in fact, humans are like animals and we usually behave like them even though we don’t notice it.

Lastly, humans tend to humanize everything around us, and that includes animals. This is something very common in people who have dogs, for example, when they say that they are an example of fidelity, love, etc. In the case of dogs, their behavior is largely due to their descent from hierarchical pack animals with an alpha male and female, and that is why they adapt very well to us and our lifestyle. From there comes their submission and fidelity in part. That is why we say that dogs are “good” and an animal like the cat that does not have that submissive nature is “bad.”

I love dogs, but I know that behind their faithful behavior there are thousands of years of selection where breeders were selecting the less aggressive dogs towards people.

When people say that an animal would never betray them or do something bad to them, it is evident, a dog or a cat, for example, is a completely different being that moves in a different sphere from us. He does not compete against us but depends on us, but when he has to compete with his fellow men, things change. It is not uncommon for a male cat to kill a female’s cubs so that she is in heat and able to reproduce. From a human point of view, it is horrible, but it is only part of their instincts and their evolution.

That same cat is not going to try to kill its owner’s baby because it has no interest in reproducing with her, simply both, cat and owner, move in different spheres.

Dolphins, these animals that seem so wonderful to us and seem to get along so well with humans, have behaviors that are despicable from a human point of view.

But that doesn’t make them bad, it just makes them animals whose behavior has evolved to optimize their chances of survival.
