As of October 7th, 2020, there are currently 7,475,262 cases of COVID-19 in America. Since the pandemic spread to our country, there have been over 200,000 deaths, and within the last 7 days, the number of cases has increased by over 300,000 (Market Watch). When we look at these numbers we can see how the situation is just getting worse, and to top it off, our current president believes that COVID-19 is something that can be easily overcome. What the President does not realize is that not everyone can afford to hire a whole team of physicians just to take care of them.
On October 5, President Trump tweeted, “Feeling really good! Don’t be afraid of COVID. Don’t let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump administration, some really great drugs & knowledge (Trump).” When President Trump tweeted this, it made me feel like he was mocking the people that were not able to overcome COVID-19. He says to not let COVID dominate our life, yet we had to quarantine and shut businesses down for 2-3 months. He says that they developed great drugs and knowledge yet the number of cases isn’t going down and the number of deaths is increasing. President Trump says that he is feeling good even though he needed supplemental oxygen and strong drugs to maintain his health. He is trying to show us COVID is not something we should be scared of, but it is. It is highly contagious and there are even reports of people having health problems after they recover from it. He claims that he has the situation under control, but when we look at the numbers, America has the highest number of cases in the world.
Overall, President Trump has not been responsible when dealing with COVID-19. You can see this through his actions. For example, Trump’s rally in Nevada did not practice any social distancing and several people were not wearing face masks. According to CNN, his own rallies “violated state mandates put in place to stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.” This occurred in several other rallies like Michigan and North Carolina. How can the President say the situation is under control when he cannot even enforce social distancing and face masks at his own rallies? Additionally, the President hosted a party at the White House in August to celebrate his re-nomination. The place was crowded, people were seated close to each other, and most people were not wearing masks. According to the Washington Post, “Two attendees said in interviews that they were not offered tests and were not even put through a more basic screening, such as being questioned whether they had any symptoms, such as coughs, or taking their temperature.”
He (President Trump) is the reason why the number of COVID-19 cases has not gone down. He did not strictly enforce social distancing or face masks nor did he care to. He chose to host those rallies and continue through with them despite the people not following the mandates that were created to protect us. On top of that, he made it seem that getting cured of COVID was something easy to do, despite the fact that not everyone can afford or is fortunate enough to be able to get first-class treatment. The President needs to take this situation more seriously and realize how many people have been negatively affected.
