Coronavirus is the only topic currently being discussed and it should be. People are panicking and running out to stores to buy as many non-perishable items as possible. This pandemic is getting scarier as the days go by and our leaders don’t care to inform us.
The panic surrounding the Coronavirus is warranted considering the public lacks information. Different news sources are reporting different ways to protect ourselves. There isn’t a cure, we don’t have full knowledge on how to protect ourselves, and our leaders aren’t leading.
The Trump administration is not supporting the country during this crisis. They haven’t given people in the United States of America proper instruction. We appoint officials to inform us whenever there is a crisis and our president waits until the last minute to take any form of action.
On March 13, he announced he was providing territories with 50 billion dollars in federal funds to combat the Coronavirus. According to the New York Times, Trump stated, “I am officially declaring a national emergency, two very big words. I’m urging every state to set up emergency operations centers effective immediately.”
Now that the panic has heightened, Trump decides it’s time to take charge and attempt bringing order to the spreading of a virus that’s been affecting people for weeks. Money is needed, but dispersing money to states without a unified plan doesn’t help with panic.
During the same speech, Trump stated, “We don’t want everybody taking this test. It’s totally unnecessary.”According to The New York Times, Trump further minimized the situation at the time by stating, “This will pass, this will pass through, and we will be even stronger for it.”
Trump had been in contact with several people who tested positive for COVID-19 and he didn’t take the virus seriously. Until March 14, after continuous pressure from the public, he decided to get tested.
The president is on record downplaying a crisis and feeding lies to the public. Regardless, if you receive your news from Trump or not, he’s still the president. He could pretend to have a hint of empathy for this crisis at minimum.
He’s a businessman more concerned with money than the well-being of those affected. While people are clearing the shelves of toilet paper and Clorox wipes from the stores. People are in a state of panic because there isn’t a common understanding of the Coronavirus.
Trump should be explaining what the virus is, how we should react to carriers, and why we shouldn’t be flying during this time. He’s letting the public interpret information for themselves, but he should stand at a podium and state facts. Explain a plan of action and why that’s the plan of action.
We don’t have a strong administration that cares about the public, so I don’t expect political correctness. However, I hope with the upcoming election people realize it’s time for a change.
