As streaming services and social media platforms have risen in popularity, everyone has been enabled the ability to share their own music, regardless of background or fame. Tik-Tok, especially, has single handedly changed the music industry and how young artists grow their individual platforms.

A current standout taking the world by storm is Benson Boone, an artist who started uploading to Tik-Tok alongside his American Idol appearance back in 2021. Boone ended up leaving the show as his own decision.

From an Official Charts article, Boone said, “Everybody on the show wanted to [make] music; they had been waiting for this moment their whole lives. And I did not feel that way. I didn’t want to get locked into something I was unsure about.”

Tik-Tok has allowed Boone to work on uploading what he is working on while exploring college and other areas of interest.

His endeavors have recently proven to pay off, with his latest single “Beautiful Things” topping the Billboard Global 200 for two weeks now while being on it for four.

After this single blew up, Boone utilized his Tik-Tok presence to promote unreleased snippets of songs viewers are desperate to hear in full. Using the platform for this has not only allowed Boone to reach a bigger audience, but has also allowed there to be excitement for what he has in store next.

Boone has announced plans for a 2024 album and world tour, which will start April 3 in Chicago, Illinois, according to LiveNation

David Kushner                                   @david.kushner Instagram

Another notable Tik-Tok sensation is David Kushner, whose Jan. 2022 release of “Miserable Man” went viral on the platform. This was his first single, and he has been slowly putting out more ever since with 26.7 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

For Popitized, Kushner said, “I posted [“Miserable Man”] on the internet like Instagram and TikTok and all that stuff and it started to become a really big trend and people really took interest in the song and me as an artist and I think that really propelled my career to where it’s at pretty fast.”

Kushner had not expected this course of events, or the possibility for the release of his ultimate potential.

In Jan. 2024, Kushner put out “Skin and Bones” while also sharing an album to be anticipated for later this year. He has a couple shows for the United States and United Kingdom listed for 2024, but no official tour as of right now.

Tik-Tok has also opened the door for users with a gained platform to try their luck with the music industry.

Nessa Barrett             @nessabarrett Instagram

Nessa Barrett first started lip synching and uploading other content to Tik-Tok in 2019, which led to her gaining over a million followers before becoming a musician.

Barrett released her debut single “Pain” in July 2020, which led to her creating more music and gaining a current following of over 19.8 million on Tik-Tok.

She spoke with ET about her rise to fame, acknowledging how hard it would have been to release “Pain” without the support she had accumulated.

Barrett also noted for ET, “It’s crazy because I dreamt about singing. When I was little, that’s all I wanted to do. So the platform that I was able to create on TikTok and Instagram and all of that really led the way for that, and I’m so grateful and I have the best supporters and the best fan base. I could never be more thankful for them.”

“NB2” is rumored to be an album for Barrett in the works for 2024; however, there has been no official confirmation. She is currently not on tour.

There is a clear reason for aspiring artists to utilize platforms like Tik-Tok in order to gain a following that will bring them success. It is becoming more and more common for artists to start their careers on social media, and there are several rising talents that will not go unnoticed.
