It has been another exciting and busy week in Chicago sports. There is a lot to go over, so it’s time to get down to business.
Starting off with baseball, it has been an interesting week for both the White Sox and Cubs, as both teams finished off the regular season this week. The Chicago White Sox went 1-6 this week and will finish the regular season with a record of 62-100, finishing in fourth place in the American League Central.
Over on the north side of Chicago, the Cubs were in a fight for their playoff lives. They already clinched a playoff spot, but were fighting against the Milwaukee Brewers over first place in the National League Central. The Cubs went 4-3 this week and will finish the regular season with a record of 95-67, just barely enough to clinch first place in the NL Central.
They will enter into the playoffs as the number one seeded team in the National League and will face the winner of the wild card game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Los Angeles Dodgers in a series that begins on Thursday October 4th.
In the NFL, the Chicago Bears played the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday and won 48-10. The Bears are now 3-1, good enough for first place in the NFC North. The Bears don’t play next week and the next time they play will be against the Miami Dolphins on October 14th in Miami.
In the soccer world, the Chicago Fire went 1-1 this week, losing to D.C. United and defeating Los Angeles FC. Their loss to D.C. United eliminated them from playoff contention, placing them in tenth place in the MLS Eastern Conference.
The Fire have three more games left this year: two against D.C. United and one against Atlanta United.
The hockey preseason is just getting started and for the Chicago Blackhawks. This means they have played six games already. In those six games, the Blackhawks won two of them and lost the other four. The Blackhawks kick off the regular season on Thursday, October 4th in Ottawa against the Ottawa Senators. The Blackhawks then travel to St. Louis to face the St. Louis Blues on October 6th, before coming home to play their first home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on October 7th.
In the basketball world, the Chicago Bulls continue to prepare for the upcoming season. However, the Bulls received some bad news this week in the form of star player Lauri Markkanen being sidelined for 6 to 8 weeks due to an elbow injury. The Bulls must now regroup and get ready to play the New Orleans Pelicans in their first preseason game on Sunday.
It’s been another exciting week in Chicago sports, with numerous highs and lows.
With baseball and soccer wrapping up and football, basketball, and hockey starting to pick up, Chicago sports is getting ready for another very exciting Fall.
