Saint Xavier’s track and field team has many talented newcomers in their program this year. One of the rising stars on this team is freshman thrower Thomas Imburgia.

Imburgia is a true asset of Saint Xavier’s track and field team throws squad. Some Freshmen are very anxious when it comes to competing in meets for the first time in their collegiate career, but Imburgia shows why he’s the real deal and confident in his craft.

In the bigger invites to open meets, Imburgia performs well and shows off against all competition. He competes in events such as shot put and weight throw in the indoor season, and has over-achieved as an athlete.

In Imburgia’s first meet of the season, and his collegiate career, at Gately Stadium in Chicago, IL., he threw a whopping 12.84 meters in shot put and finished in eighth place overall at the meet .

In Imburgia’s second meet at Saint Ambrose University, he beat his previous personal record in weight throw with a mark of 11.97 meters.

At The University of Chicago meet he had a massive personal record in shot put. Imburgia improved from a 12.84 to a 13.51, as well as placing seventh in the meet for that event.

Imburgia has had a phenomenal indoor season so far as he accels past other talented freshmen and other experienced veterans. If Imburgia continues to build off the solid foundation, he will have a memorable career.

As of now Imburgia is only millimeters away from breaking the all-time freshman shot put record in Saint Xavier’s history. Which is currently set by Riley Lundgren.

Imburgia started his throwing career when he was a junior at Harlem High School, saying “I got into track and field because my health teacher [at the time] was the head track coach for the girls team, and [while I was in his class] he was trying to get me to try throwing and after a while I did.”

He also played basketball in highschool, but Imburgia would find his love for the sport of track and field and it would eventually become his passion.

By the time Imburgia was a senior he was named team captain, placed at conference and sectionals, and received a scholarship offer from Saint Xavier.

“It was a good experience. I had a good coach, good teammates, a lot of fun, and made good memories,” said Imburgia when asked about his time at Harlem.

His coach ended up being someone who he thanks for his success and became his inspiration to keep going and reach heights he never imagined.

In all, Imburgia’s love for his sport shows in his game, “Yes, this is the sport I wanted to play.”

Even with his love for the game, Imburgia is unsure if he will play after his college days are over.

“If I [have] the opportunity I would but I don’t think I will,” he said.

But being so early in his college career, things are bound to change and opportunities may come in the future.

Although trying to become a professional can be a challenge, Imburgia has a lot of time to blossom as an athlete as he currently has an ambition to get better everyday when he attends practices, workouts, as well as watches film. Through all of his work, it presents itself when he competes.

“…Time management and determination…,” said Imburgia when asked about the most important qualities of being a college athlete. With these qualities, Imburgia could reach heights higher than what he could ever imagine.

Imburgia works very hard for Saint Xavier’s track and field team and even with adversity Imburgia continues to keep a positive attitude and his best foot forward no matter the situation.

His bright attitude shines through anything and spreads to his teammates and coaches, and boosts the team morale.

As long as Imburgia keeps on his path of determination he will evolve into a great athlete in the future.
