Spoilers Ahead! Do not read unless you have seen “The Marvels” or do not mind spoilers.
Previously, Captain Marvel was seen mysteriously swapping places with Kamala Khan, a young superhero who goes by the name Ms. Marvel. Just before this, scientist Monica Rambeau enters a hex causing her to gain superpowers.
Captain Marvel is also the aunt of Monica, and they have not seen each other in a long time. However, the three must now unite in order to stop the evil Dar-Benn.
There are many things that I enjoyed about this film.
First and foremost, there is the immediate click between everyone. Although the characters had only recently united, the buildup of their relationships was something that this film did differently than others.
One scene in particular that embodied this was the training scene. We got to see them establish character and show each other who they truly are.
As much as critics hated this film, I truly enjoyed it because of its cast.
I also enjoyed that the story was something I found unexpected. I originally thought that it would be the three uniting to stop someone who gained power during Thanos’s snap. However, I did not think that the villain would rise from the fallout of the first film when Captain Marvel destroys the Supreme Intelligence.
The thing that I enjoyed the most about this film was its ending. The setup for the incursion that breaks reality was due, and I was on the edge of my seat as reality itself collided with another world. I was not expecting Monica to sacrifice herself, but it looks as if the future is bright.
The post-credits revealed that Monica is safe in an alternate reality but is being held for questioning by the X-Men. Shown on camera are Beast and Binary, but Charles Xavier is mentioned by name.
I am extremely happy to say that Kelsey Grammer is back as Beast. He has not appeared as the character since 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”
Other than this, I had a few minor complaints about the film.
First, the villain is not memorable. Dar-Benn is a character I am not familiar with and have never heard of until the film was released. However, Zawe Ashton’s menacing portrayal makes up for it.
I also did not like that Dar-Benn died so easily. There was a buildup for a superpowered fight, but this did not happen. She died of too much power.
Another thing I would like to note is that I have no interest in seeing the Young Avengers in the MCU’s future. As cool as it was to see Ms. Marvel recruit Kate Bishop, I feel it would be unnecessary to build this new team, especially since we know what the future holds for us so far.
I do not enjoy how much content has to be watched in order to see the film. In order to understand the film, the following titles have to be watched: “Avengers: Infinity War” (film,) “Captain Marvel” (film,) “Avengers: Endgame” (film,) “Wandavision” (series,) “Ms. Marvel” (series,) and “Secret Invasion” (series.)
In addition, I recommend viewing “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (film) and “Hawkeye” (series.) I add these because the first explains incursions of universes, and the second introduces us to Kate Bishop.
Overall, it ties into the MCU in a much larger way than expected. Although I complain about all the titles necessary to watch, it does help the continuity in many ways. It gives the sense that the future will consist of the exploration of alternate realities.
Additionally, this means the incursion between realities is going to be a real threat in the future. Perhaps the plot of the third Doctor Strange movie will be him rescuing Monica? Is this X-Men universe the same one as “X-Men ‘97?”
Currently, we do not have answers for these questions.
Would I recommend this? Yes, this is a fun break from all of the world-ending chaos that has left the MCU in shambles over the last two years.
This story is one that has heart in it, and I deeply respect that. Although the film is only an hour and a half long, it makes you want to see more.
It is unknown when characters such as Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Ms. Marvel will return, but I know it’s bound to happen soon.
All previously mentioned titles are currently streaming on Disney+, and “The Marvels” is in theaters now!
