The Mandalorian Season 2 Opener Proves That The Best Is Yet To Come

MAJOR spoilers for The Mandalorian’s Chapter 9 “The Marshal”

Mando and “Baby Yoda” are finally back in action. As the ending of season one entailed, Mando is now on a voyage to return the Child to his people. What we didn’t know is how dangerous this journey would turn out to be. Not only is it far from over, but how will the big reveal at the end, play into Mando’s quest? Will he be a threat or an ally?

Because this was in fact a season opener, I don’t believe there was much to expect. In general, premiere episodes of a new season usually welcome back the core characters with a new plight and then set up a bit of what the rest of the season will be. “The Marshal” defied the set bar and delivered a western themed adventure packed with surprises and a giant tease to what’s to come.

After receiving a forced tip of where Mando could find another Mandalorian to guide him in his journey, Mando comes across what he thinks is another Mandalorian. To us Star Wars fans however, it’s a very familiar looking set of Mandalorian armor–it’s the bounty hunter Boba Fett’s armor.

To some fans, the bounty hunter was considered dead when he fell into the Sarlaac Pit in 1983’s Return of the Jedi. To most fans however, Boba Fett was considered alive. The first (and only) canonical tease of what happened to the bounty hunter was in 2015’s Star Wars novel, Star Wars: Aftermath. It was a miniscule hint, but it ignited various theories online. The novel stated  that Mandalorian armor was found and sold to Cobb Vanth to Jawas. That’s right! Cobb Vanth, the Marshal seen in the premiere episode. “The Marshall” picked up the character and the Mandalorian armor story detail straight from Star Wars: Aftermath. Fan service done right.

Speaking of fan service, the star of the episode, the Krayt dragon, was certainly a highlight of the episode. Bones of a Krayt dragon can actually be spotted in the first scene on Tatooine’s desert in A New Hope (1977). Since then, the creature has appeared in many Star Wars books and comics. However The Mandalorian is responsible for its first live-action debut. The mythical creature proved a powerful force against the Mandalorian’s demolition team, living up to and surpassing its potential.

“The Marshal” ends off on a high note, Mando acquires the Mandalorian armor after fulfilling his part of the deal and rides off in the sunset. That is of course until the camera pans to the right and a cloaked figure is shown observing Mando’s departure. The figure then faces the camera and it’s none other than Temura Morrison! Humorously enough, this is Temura Morrison’s first time portraying this character in live-action, yet people just knew which character he was. Morrison previously portrayed the character of Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones (2002). Additionally, he also played the clones of his character. He would later return to continue portraying clone troopers in Revenge of the Sith (2005). Since then, he’s voiced Jango and Boba Fett, as well as clone troopers in subsequent video games. Because Boba is a clone of his father, it was obvious that Boba would look just like his father.

What could Boba be after? His old armor? The Child? Mando’s armor? The speculated answer is probably appropriate for its own self-contained article. Maybe we won’t have to wait that long either because the next episode streams this Friday exclusively on Disney+.
