Since its two-episode premiere on Nov. 28, 2025, “Heated Rivalry” has exploded in popularity. What started as a low-budget, foreign-made series is now one of the most talked about shows of the year and has amassed an astounding number of streaming minutes: 324 million and counting.

The series, created by Canadian network Crave and licensed by HBO Max, follows the story of two closeted gay hockey players who are rivals in the NHL. Over the course of six episodes, Shane Hollander (Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (Connor Storrie) go from “casual” hookups to intimate, heart-breaking love confessions.

The success of “Heated Rivalry” was unexpected and can only be attributed to word-of-mouth—or more accurately, word-of-TikTok. The series gained most of its notoriety through fans obsessing over scenes on social media sites such as TikTok and X (formerly Twitter).

There’s no single reason why “Heated Rivalry” has blown up in such a major way, but rather multiple factors which aligned in the series’ favor.

First and foremost, the driving force of the series is the undeniable chemistry between the two lead actors.

Williams and Storrie were relatively unknown before they landed their roles on “Heated Rivalry,” but this isn’t to say they’re inexperienced. Both actors have spent years honing their craft in indie short films and passion projects.

Fresh faces in Hollywood are rare, but hopefully “Heated Rivalry” can lead by example. It’s obvious that audiences are hungry for new talent: Williams and Storrie went from day jobs to presenting at the Golden Globes and doing late night shows in a matter of months.

The chemistry between both actors is what makes “Heated Rivalry” work so well. At first, many claimed the show was only watched because of its sex scenes, but this simply isn’t true.

Yes, the sex scenes are widely discussed, but only because they’re done so well. They somehow manage to toe the delicate line between sexy and realistic. The sex scenes are steamy but also honest, unapologetic, and vulnerable.

Some call the scenes too explicit, but this take often comes with other biases. Are the scenes too graphic, or are they just seen as such because the couple isn’t straight?

The show’s popularity is built off more than just these intimate scenes, which the numbers show. The fifth episode of the series is one of the most highly-rated episodes of all time on IMDB. This particular episode has zero sex scenes.

The primary demographic watching “Heated Rivalry” is women, which has also been a controversial point of discussion.

When asked about this, Williams and Storrie weighed in with a thoughtful perspective.

“I think it’s […] geared towards a feminine gaze. […] That’s why we like romance. It isn’t just the sex or whatever, it’s the moments in between where you see desire and this pull toward vulnerability and connection,” Storrie said.

Williams added his opinion by acknowledging that the often sexist stereotypes common in heteronormative romances aren’t present in “Heated Rivalry,” making it a safe watch for women.

In any case, the women watching “Heated Rivalry” have helped build it into a cultural phenomenon. A second season is already confirmed with rumors of a third circulating.

It’s nothing special for a show to have a dedicated fandom, but the miracle of “Heated Rivalry” is that it’s gone beyond the niche corners of TikTok and X.

The series is being name-dropped by politicians and A-List actors left and right, and it even inspired a real-life hockey player to come out.

The series’ success says a lot about what audiences want right now. They want to see talented new actors, love stories with complex characters, and—perhaps most importantly—representation done right.
