The transition from high school to college can be quite scary to some. However, do not fear. Here I will list the greatest pieces of advice I have, based on my two years at Saint Xavier University.

5. Meet with Professors and Advisors/Plan Time at SXU

One of the most beneficial things that an incoming student can do is familiarize themselves with their professors and advisers. It is always okay to ask questions about course material.

Additionally, it is smart for one to see what classes they are required to take for their major and possibly any minors. It allows for a calming of anxiety, especially since some students are unsure of what they can take. Professors in each subject are knowledgeable about the courses offered, and are always able to assist.

4. For those Living on Campus, be Cautious of Dining Swipes

Although SXU sends out an email saying roughly how much money you should have left per week, it’s always nice to keep a check of the balance of your Cougar Card.

Food at the diner and at Rhubarbs, the on-campus store can sometimes be pricey. Additionally, students are able to use their Cougar Card at the two Starbucks locations on campus.

If a student were to run out of money on their meal plan, they are to manually add money to their account.

3. Roam the Halls on Day One to Familiarize Oneself

On my first day, I had no clue where any of my classes were. In that event, I had to ask around to find where to go. However, over time it becomes easier to memorize where everything is.

Classes typically are in five buildings: the Warde Academic Center, the Driehaus Center, the Graham School of Management, the Visual Arts Center, and the Campus Media Center. Do not fret, on your schedule it will tell you precisely which building and classroom your classes will be. Additionally, on the class syllabus it will also say the exact location.

2. Utilize Rate My Professors

One of the most useful websites when it comes to searching for classes to take is Rate My Professors. As said, it allows students to rate professors on a 1-5 scale, and give details of what to expect or how prepared they are for class.

I have used it every semester when searching for courses to take, and I no longer have to worry about whether or not my professor is a good fit for me.

1. Attend Events on Campus

Saint Xavier University has many events throughout each week. Events have ranged from simple painting to even a trip to Six Flags.

It is through these events that students make memories and friendships. Not only do they relate to students’ interests, but nearly all are free to attend.

Events will continue to happen and will grow as the student body continues to provide support and show up.

Overall, there are many things that can help you during their first year of college. Hopefully this information allows you to take a breather.
