On Thursday, March 18th, the House passed two proposals that would provide a path to citizenship to the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the United States.
All House democrats and 9 Republicans voted in favor of the American Dream and Promise Act. It makes me so happy to see some bipartisan support for the bill in the House.
I believe that a path to citizenship for Dreamers is long overdue. Dreamers are some of the most hard working individuals in the United States and they deserve a path to citizenship. Now, the bill will go to the Senate to see if it passes there.
I hope and pray that both Democrats and Republicans are able to come together and vote in favor of the bill. Although I remain hopeful, I will not be surprised if the bill gets shut down when it goes to the Senate.
President Biden seems to be getting a lot done throughout the beginning of his presidency and I could not be happier. The American Dream and Promise Act would have not been on the agenda if Donald Trump was still president.
I am elated that Trump is out of office and that we finally have someone as president that wants to give Dreamers a path to citizenship.
I personally know of a lot of people in my life who are Dreamers and they will be greatly affected by this bill if it were to pass in both the House and the Senate. Many Dreamers are people who were brought to the United States as children and did not have any choice. Providing a path to citizenship for the Dreamers would change their lives in unimaginable ways.
I feel as though being born in the United States and being a citizen is something that is taken for granted. I was fortunate enough to have been born in the United States and I recognize the privilege I carry.
I did not have to endure many hardships compared to those who are undocumented and have to work twice as hard.
There are many students at Saint Xavier University who are Dreamers and would be overwhelmed with joy if the bill were to pass. I sincerely hope that both parties in the Senate are able to come together and cooperate on this bill. If this bill were to be passed and become law, it would be a monumental moment in history for Dreamers and the undocumented community.
