Saint Xavier University vs. Viterbo University (2-0) W
SXU Women’s Soccer played Viterbo University on Tues. Sept. 24 at the Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field. SXU triumphed on the night, winning 2-0.
Junior midfielder Veronica Davilla and senior midfielder Louissa Schreiber scored the goals.
In the 11th minute of the game, Davilla received a pass from fifth-year senior Neida Ocampo and shot the ball from 30 yards out, getting it just over the keeper to open the scoring.
Schreiber came out of a scrum and got a shot away from the left side to make it 2-0 in the 67th minute to secure their first win in the conference and score her first goal of the season.
Davilla led the Cougars with four goals and fifth-year senior goalkeeper Eden Suda had five saves to keep her first clean sheet of the season in her start.
SXU had 12 shots with eight of them going on target. They tried to find another goal but couldn’t get the ball past the keeper for a third time.
Davilla herself had a team-high five shots and four to the goal.
Suda, Davilla, Schreiber, senior midfielder Jacqueline Gonzalez, junior midfielder Lewis Hope, and redshirt junior defender Isabel Guzman played 90 minutes for SXU.
It was a good win from SXU, recovering from defeat to start the conference season. From here they are looking to play well and aim for the top of the table.

To continue on the weekend events, the Cougars faced off against Saint Ambrose University Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field on a gloomy Saturday, Sept. 28.
Despite being a player down, SXU managed to pull out a victory in the dying minutes of the game from another goal from Davilla. Davilla has shown to have a great start to the season as she scores her fifth win.
She drove from the right side of the field and centered her shot to get it past the goalkeeper into the lower right corner and the back of the net.
In the 82nd minute of action, the Fighting Bees appeared to take the lead, but the goal was disallowed after the linesman called for offsides.
It was a hard, intense game from both sides; SXU had just enough to ensure their second win in the conference and fight till the end.
This was SXU’s first win against the Fighting Bees since Sept. 7, 2008, breaking a ten-game losing streak.
Guzman was sent off in the 68th minute after seeing two yellow cards in six minutes, leaving her team down a player with 20 minutes remaining.
In her second start, Suda came away with another clean sheet to improve her record to 2-0 in net.
Davilla led the team with seven shots on target and five heading toward the goal.
Ocampo and sophomore forward Alex Jonaitis each had one shot.
Suda, Hope, Davilla, and junior midfielder Vicki Ferrer were on the pitch for the full game. Gonzalez played 86 minutes and finished the game with one shot.
The Cougars had ten shots and six going to the net with St. Ambrose having ten and five trying to find a goal.
With this win, SXU now has six points entering their fourth conference game. They currently sit in second place and are looking to get ahead of St. Francis who are in first with seven points.
The Cougars will play their next conference game against Calumet College of St. Joseph on Saturday, Oct. 5 in Whiting, Indiana. Kickoff is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. SXU is looking to add another three points to the board to get their third win in a row.
