Anticipating The Batman: Not An Origin Tale

As we get closer to the release of The Batman, more details are starting to emerge about the upcoming Batman solo film. While it is still unclear whether The Batman will take place in the “DC Extended Universe” it is quite certain that Robert Pattison is now the caped crusader. Originally, Ben Affleck was supposed to play Gotham’s vigilante, but left the project as he wanted to do other things and the stress of it was too much for him.

Now that The Batman is focusing solely on the character of Batman, the question remains: Will we have to watch Bruce Wayne’s parents die again? We have seen Batman’s parents get shot million of times already. Pop culture primarily already knows that Bruce’s parents are murdered as they know that Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben also dies.

Most recently, Bruce’s parents were seen being shot dead in Joker which was a total surprise because it looked as if the Wayne family would not get any spotlight during the film. Before that, movie audiences saw Bruce Wayne’s parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, get killed in the intro scene to Batman V. Superman. In just a span of 3 years, audiences saw Thomas and Martha get shot 2 times.

Thankfully, The Batman director, Matt Reeves, has come forth with new details that will probably shed some light into whether we will have to sit down and watch the Wayne family get killed again.

During an interview with Nerdist.com, Matt Reeves mentioned that his take on Batman will not be an origin story.

“I wanted to do not an origin tale, but a tale that would still acknowledge his origins, in that it formed who he is. Like this guy, he’s majorly struggling, and this is how he’s trying to rise above that struggle,” Reeves explained.

“But that doesn’t mean that he even fully understands, you know. It’s that whole idea of the shadow self and what’s driving you, and how much of that you can incorporate, and how much of it you’re doing that you’re unaware of.”

It will be very interesting as to where Matt Reeves takes the character of Batman and what classic villains we might see pop up. As I mentioned earlier, it is still unclear as to when or where this film takes place. When Ben Affleck left the project, it was later revealed that Matt Reeves was already the role for a different actor. So who really knows how much of the film has changed.

With Warner Brother’s recent success with Joker, they may want to recreate that success with The Batman. Joker was well-known to not be included with the DCEU but rather, it was it’s own standalone film. That may also be the case with The Batman. However this also might be set while Batman was in prime and be a precursor to the events of Batman V. Superman

The release date for the film is still set for June 25th, 2021. However production for the film has completely been halted due to COVID-19. Matt Reeves has confirmed that 25% of the film has been shot, but they are not quite at the editing stage. Hopefully the film’s release date will remain the same.
