If you are intending on going to the theater to see a movie any time soon, you can guarantee that at least one superhero movie will be on the list of options. In the past year, and these couple of months of 2016, there has been a huge spike in production of superhero movies. Antman and Fantastic Four were popular last year.
Earlier this year, Deadpool was the must-see. And now, Batman v. Superman is the only movie everyone is talking about. There are still so many exciting movies promised to be released soon, such as Captain America: Civil War and Suicide Squad.
It seems like the only types of movies that everyone is talking about nowadays are super hero movies. The buzz is everywhere-all over Facebook, Twitter, and among the conversations you will hear in passing.
It is true, though-there has been a huge spike in superhero movie production recently. It is new and exciting to see more underrated superheroes, like Antman, come out of the shadows of the older, more popular superheroes like Spiderman.
However, this superhero movie fever cannot last forever. The more superhero movies they make, the sooner the fad will die out. Superhero movies are expensive to make, and, although these movies seem to be doing well, financially that is untrue. Antman spent $130 million to make, yet only took in $57 million on opening weekend. Even Fantastic Four struggled, as it made only $26 million on opening weekend after spending $120 million to make.
The newer superhero movies and sequels are expected to be bigger and better than the previous ones. For a superhero movie nowadays to have a big impact, they have to use more money for better effects. Each movie is costing more and more to make, and this cycle of spending more, but earning less cannot be maintainable.
While money is a big issue, especially in the movie industry, the crowd and viewers of these movies need to be taken in account as well. A lot of the movies are being remade and having sequels and series added on. While it is always fun to have a continued series of a favorite superhero, it can be dangerous, too.
Audiences can quickly get tired of the content. It was a good decision to wait many years before adding anything new to the Spiderman saga, but the new series of Batman movies started very soon after The Dark Knight saga ended. There was no time to appreciate the Dark Knight series before another installment was started.
Besides, the longer a series is drawn out, the less likely people will want to continue watching it. The sagas can become confusing, too, since there are so many sequels and installments. How many movies and remakes are solely dedicated to the Batman or Spiderman character? (Answer: a lot).
The superhero movie fever is alive and thriving now. All the installments of Paranormal Activity, and movies like it, had their moment in the theater spotlight, and now it is superhero movies’ turn. Sure, trends change and another genre will take over, but for now….how excited are you for Suicide Squad!?
