To say that the 2014 season for the women’s golf team ended on a high note is an understatement. The Cougars nabbed their highest team finish of the season back on Oct. 6 and 7 in the William Woods Invite out in Fulton, Missouri.
Throughout the course of the season, there have been countless articles written and accolades given to sophomore, Taylor Thompson and her incredible talent. For once, the spotlight is not on Thompson, but on the team as a whole.
While Thompson was still the number one overall participant among her teammates, she placed sixth out of 32 with a two-day score of 148. While this was Thompson’s lowest individual finish, her score greatly helped bring her team to victory.
California native and current SXU freshman Hannah Cruz finished in 11th place and had a combined score of 161. Right behind her was her freshman counterpart, Hunter Schultz, in 12th place with a score of 162.
Sophomore Katie Reno and freshman Marissa Hohman finished in 22nd and 29th place respectively. Reno’s scores for both Monday and Tuesday were 93 and Hohman’s were 115 and 113.
After speaking with Hohman about her performance this semester and the bond that she and the girls share, it is clear that they are content with how the season went and cannot wait to start playing again in the spring.
“The season is over now, but I feel as if the season went really well and all of us girls quickly formed a close bond, along with the men’s team as well,” said Hohman. “That is a really important aspect for me and I know it means a lot to my teammates as well. Taylor and Katie have been great role models and guides for Hannah, Hunter and I. They have taught us about attitude, dedication and more about the game of golf in general.
“Personally, I could not have asked for a better group of girls to be surrounded by,” she continued. “We have a blast together and can count on each other for support- exactly what being a team is all about.”
The Cougars have a few months off until they are right back at it again, continuing their search for greatness as a team and as individual competitors.
