Riot Games latest addition to League of Legends has taken the community by storm.
Team Fight Tactics, also known as TFT, was introduced in the Patch 9.13 update. Categorized as a “Auto Battler” or “Auto Chess” genre, TFT is essentially Riot Games’s response to Valve Corporation’s DotA 2’s “Underworld” game mode. Eight players are pitted against one another, playing in a turn based battle system.
After using accrued gold to recruit champions to battle on your behalf from a randomly generated pool, players will set their newly hired warriors on the battlefield. This encourages the player to strategize which warriors will fight on their own accord to properly synergize for maximum returns.
Through a process of strategically placing and developing compositions of champions, players will climb through the ranks, often with ___ or even sheer luck. Champions interact with one another and items are often dropped, which can give your team an additional boost; the combinations of the paths to victory are endless.
Riot has gone on record stating that TFT is a love letter to DotA’s Auto Chess game mode, sharing, “Recently, we’ve been trying different kinds of modes that are deep and unique additions to the League experience. TFT is our next big exploration in that space and the first time we’re jumping into a different genre. We’ve always loved strategy games and recently we’ve gotten into the new auto-battler genre—folks around the office have been playing an insane amount of Dota Auto Chess in particular. We love it, and it actually got us inspired to create something new as a mode in League.”
With the arise of TFT also came a new level of personalization, Little Legends. Little Legends effectively operate as avatars for all your TFT battles. They are customized with emoting and dancing features that can be activated all throughout the fight.
Since its conception, TFT has garnered a prosperous cult following. The new game mode has held a permanent position in the game client. This means that TFT has essentially replaced the option for rotation game modes.
Rotating Game Modes, as the name implies, was a small pool of oddball and wacky ways to play League of Legends that would be temporarily available before continuing the cycle. Two Reddit pages have sprung up since then: r/TeamFightTactics with 151k members and r/CompetitiveTFT 34.4k members, all enjoying their favorite champions in a new and fresh experience.
Additionally, TFT videos on itemizations and compositions have began to permeate the social platform, YouTube. Big name League of Legends YouTubers such as Scarra, Disguised Toast, Gbayy99 and Exil have all contributed to the pool on content with their elevated game knowledge.
