Saint Xavier University welcomed students back last week with the 2014 Winter Week sponsored by the Department of Campus Life, Residence Life, Saint Xavier Council, Shannon Center and Campus Ministry.

This week full of events began Sunday, January 12 with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord at 8 p.m. in McDonough Chapel. It ended on Sunday, January 19, with another student mass and social.

On Tuesday during lunch students were offered free cups of soup while they enjoyed a performance given by local musician Eric Ortiz.
Senior Jessica Scates, a Spanish Major, saw Otriz’s performance and stated that, “He was phenomenal. I thought the song selection was good. They were songs that people knew and enjoyed.”

Multiple students went up to get soup and others went and wrote out song requests for Ortiz. The songs played ranged from classic Backstreet Boys to Nelly and Outkast.

Later that night students were able to participate in open skate downtown at Millennium Park. With only a five dollar deposit required by students looking to take the bus from Saint Xavier, which was returned upon each student’s arrival for the trip, admission to the park was free and skate rentals were only ten dollars.

Aside from the Men’s Basketball game, Wednesday saw the Registered Student Organizations Fair where students, both old and new, were able to learn about the different organizations hosted here on campus.

On Thursday, January 16, more fun was found in the SXU diner where there was a Hot Chocolate Bar with toppings for students to enjoy.
The first one hundred students were also able to decorate their very own mugs before enjoying the delicious hot chocolate.
Thursday night students were able to go to the Res Center to sample and vote for their favorite pizzas from the neighborhood, while being entertained by comedian Michael Palascak.

At the end of the week students were able to de-stress with a mini manicure, mini pedicure, or chair massage at the Student Lounge. It was definitely a perfect way to relax after the first week back in classes for the Spring semester.

After a day of relaxation and joy for it being Friday, students were able to participate in the Blizzard Bowl from 10 p.m. to midnight. This included a bus from Regina, as well as bowling and shoe rental.

Students were given a week full of fun and interesting Saint Xavier University sponsored events.
