SXU’s Transfer Student Services Center and Tau Sigma Honor Society sponsor “March Madness to Give Back” Charity Event

Throughout March the Tau Sigma Honor Society in collaboration with the Transfer Student Services Center sponsored “March Madness to Give Back.” Mary Carol Pacielli, Transfer Records Clerk, stated “Since the start of the pandemic, it has not been possible to have events that involve coming together in order to raise money such as holding bake sales. This semester we chose 3 charities that everyone can contribute to without being on campus such as donating money or purchasing an item from Amazon wish lists online.”

Each charity chosen has a special meaning to the leaders of Tau Sigma and the Transfer Student Services Center. Pacielli said “Paige Sciera, the Vice President of our Tau Sigma chapter, suggested “My Joyful Heart” because it has been a charity that her family has been a part of for about 8 years. According to Paige, “During the winter season, they offer an opportunity where you can “sponsor” a child and help provide them gifts/necessities for the holidays.”

Pacielli continued, “Eve Molly Esleta, the Secretary of our Tau Sigma chapter, was drawn to the “Thirst Project” organization because it “hits home to me because I know my family members aren’t as lucky to have easy access to clean water. It really breaks my heart to know not everyone has access to clean water. It is such a necessity for our bodies and health.”

The third charity, Crisis Center of South Suburbia, was chosen by Pacielli herself. “ [I’ve] been a supporter of the organization and has heard about the support they provide for domestic violence victims including shelter and legal services. Their mission is also in line with goals of Title IX and SXU’s commitment to enforcing that policy” said Pacielli.

The items that are necessary for collection include “macaroni, canned soups, peanut butter and other non-perishable goods, which can be dropped off in the collection box located at the Information Desk in the Warde Academic Center.”

Molly Esleta, the Secretary of Saint Xavier’s Tau Sigma chapter, mentioned the significant impact of donating to the charities mentioned, “Living as blessed as we are, we may take things for granted as we are lucky enough to have access when we’d like. A small contribution or spreading the word about this (event) could really help these organizations and help others especially in…these hard times, for I know that these organizations may be struggling”

Tau Sigma urges all members of the SXU community “to please consider making a donation to 1, 2 or all 3 of these organizations…it will definitely help someone who is in need of the services provided by these wonderful organizations” concluded Pacielli.

For more information the “full list of food items can be found attached to the donation box or you can contact transfercenter@sxu.edu with any questions.”
