Saint Xavier University is a community that is in accordance with the University’s Catholic and Mercy Values.
As an educational institution, SXU is committed to having an environment that is free from oppression, tormenting, and discrimination based on a person’s gender or race. This also includes sexual misconduct in any way, shape, or form.
Under the Title IX, the University has a responsibility to pursue complaints that are related to sexual misconduct and the areas related to it.
Since the recent incident pertaining to an alleged sexual assault that happened on the SXU campus, many students have been wondering how Saint Xavier actually handles allegations of sexual misconduct, as well as how an individual goes about reporting a sexual misconduct.
There multiple resources that are offered for students who are seeking help and guidance in reporting sexual misconduct.
One of the resources is the Counseling Center, which is available 24/7/365 for SXU students. The hours by appointment are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or by phone during office hours. The number is 773-298-4045 for students to call and make an appointment for free and confidential help with any problem.
If the emergency is on campus, the student is supposed to call Public Safety at the number 773-298-3911. From there, they will contact the on-call counselor for the student to meet with a discuss the situation in a safe environment.
The Office of Public Safety is available to receive reports of incidents of sexual misconduct 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year. They will be able to arrange transportation to a local hospital, meet with local law enforcement and to meet with a member of the Dean of Students Office for the student.
Another resource is the Dean of Students Office, which can assist students in knowing their options in response to the incident, and assist with meantime measures.
An additional resource comes through the Residence Life staff. The Residence Life staff is available to help the student make an initial report and assist them with the process.
An external agency to Saint Xavier University is Pillars Community. The staff members of Pillars Community are trained specifically to work with the survivors of sexual misconduct or sexual violence: the Sexual Assault Hotline is 708-482-9600.
A second sexual assault hotline that is available 24/7 for any individual seeking confidential support and additional resources is RAINN. The number is 800- 656-HOPE (4673).
If a student wants to report sexual misconduct, they can report to the Dean of Students/Title IX Office, which is located in the Warde Academic Center, L-103, and the number is 773-298-3121.
An additional place to report a sexual misconduct is Residence Life, located in Rubloff Hall. The number to reach a staff member is 773-298-3977.
Students may also report to the following law enforcement agencies: Chicago Police Department: 312-745- 0570 (22nd District), Oak Lawn Police Department: 708-422-8292, Cook County Sheriff’s Office: 773-674-2276, Evergreen Park Police Department: 708-422-2142.
Saint Xavier University encourages students to report any form of sexual misconduct and for the reporting parties to pursue criminal action for incidents of sexual misconduct that may also be crimes under Illinois criminal statutes.
