SXU’s Men’s secure 2-0 win, Women’s settle for 0-0 draw in USF clash.

Saint Xavier University vs. University of St. Francis 1-0 (W)

Saint Xavier men’s soccer team came home to a winning game after clashing with the University of St. Francis on Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field.

SXU came out on top 2-0 with goals from sophomore forward Ivring Moreno, and sophomore midfielder Aidan Breslin. 

It was a crucial victory for SXU as they now improve to a game-unbeaten streak in CCAC games. SXU sits in fourth place with 11 points at the time of writing. They have three wins, two draws, and 0 defeats. 

SXU has been a great team defensively so far, they have not conceded a single goal in their five conference games and have scored nine goals during that tenure. 

Redshirt goalkeeper Joel Estrada has kept his fourth clean sheet as the starting goalkeeper for the Cougars.

Moreno’s goal came in the 31st minute after receiving a pass from senior midfielder Francisco Espinoza. Morena fired his shot to the bottom left corner of the goal to give them the lead.  

The Cougar’s second goal arrived in the 66th minute from a counterattack. Freshman forward Rodrigo Hernandez laid it off to Bresline who slotted the ball into the back of the net. 

Moreno had a game-high, four attempts on goal while Bresline had three with two heading to goal. 

SXU had a total of 16 shots and eight toward the net. USF had eight with only three to the net. 

This is SXU’s fourth straight win against USF. Their last defeat was in March of 2021. SXU will confidently arrive at their upcoming match when competing with USF, as their record wins are coming in for a fifth.

 The Cougars will play Olivet Nazarene University on Wednesday, Oct.16, in Bourbonnais, Ill. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. SXU is looking to continue to play well on both sides of the field and climb to the top of the summit and keep playing with the same momentum and energy. 

Last year in Oct. SXU was able to secure a 1-0 victory over ONU, and are looking to repeat history on Wednesday.

The women’s soccer team was also in action this past Saturday, Oct but they could not collect all three points. Both teams were locked to a 0-0 draw at the Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Dybass recorded six saves, keeping her team in the contest throughout the game. 

SXU had a great opportunity to open the scoring in the 11th minute. Junior midfielder Veronica Davilla had her shot saved from the keeper off the crossbar and sent it off for a corner. 

Just before halftime, senior midfielder Louisa Schreiber’s shot attempt hit the post to keep the game 0-0 entering the second half. 

Schreiber had four shot attempts while fifth-year senior midfielder Neida Ocampo finished off the match with three shots. 

Davilla concluded the game with two shots and one on goal. 

In 90 minutes, SXU recorded nine shots with one on target, while USF had 11 shots with six on target. 

SXU are currently fourth in the CCAC standings with 10 points, Their record is three wins, one draw, and one defeat.  

They will also travel to Bourbonnais, Ill to take on Olivet Nazarene University on Wednesday, Oct. 15, The game is set to kick off at 4:00 p.m.  

The Cougars lost their last game with ONU last year on Oct. 11, 2023, at Deaton Field. ONU took home a 1-0 victory so SXU is looking to pull out a win this time around. ONU are in second place so this is a chance for SXU to catch them on points.
