Deborah “Debbie” Beal—The Center For SUCCESS Director—plans to implement new changes and policies for campus events, the expansion of Champ’s Kitchen pantry, and programming for the upcoming school year.
Beal says she’d like to see more in-person events return to campus because they will “…provide opportunities for students to engage with one another and with potential employers.”
Beal continued: “We also want to broaden our reach so more students know about our services by holding more pop-up events, by meeting with RSOs and by working directly with faculty and their classes.”
Another way the Department promotes outreach to the campus community is by getting the word out about Champ’s Kitchen, says Beal.
“I think the word is spreading that the food pantry is available and a wider variety of foods will make it more appealing to our diverse SXU community.”
In order to expand the food pantry, the Facilities Department will work closely with the Center For SUCCESS Department to install a freezer by the Fall 2022 semester.
Beal is confident that having a freezer will be a ‘great addition’ to the pantry—which will be located inside the Department Office.
This would help to “…expand the types of food choices the SXU community will have access to,” Beal continued to note, saying that, “Frozen vegetables, for instance, are much closer to fresh than canned and often a preference.”
Beal also mentioned that the Department will continue advising for undecided and pre-clinical Nursing students.
“In addition, we help with Graduate school applications, connect SXU students and alumni with employers, help with resume and cover letter preparation and interviewing skills,” she added.
As for other future plans, Beal is negotiating them with her staff and University Relations.
“We are talking about some new and exciting programming for the fall but nothing that I am ready to divulge just yet,“ stated Beal. “We strive to keep learning and growing to keep pace with the needs of our students.”
